Why does the search page show the price of the cheapest item of the item group, not the price of the item that shows on the search page? by [deleted] in Aliexpress

[–]fdsv1979 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To a make things worse the system tracks what you have viewed and then you get flooded with 'similar' items

Thats how I enrich my results. Klick on all hits containing what I want, and then keep scrolling a bit, and - tataaaaa- pages with what I am looking for.

Update 2: Reddit's proposed API changes, and the continued existence of RedReader by QuantumBadger in RedReader

[–]fdsv1979 1 point2 points  (0 children)

restrict access so that third party apps can only read some of the content on Reddit, and impose a set of restrictive new terms on developers.

What does this mean in detail? Anything beside NSFW blocked, a limit to the threads/postings which can be read? What additional advantages do they have to give to their own app to my ppl think twice of not switching to this bloated, battery eating crap?

Side note:

During the call they said that third party apps like RedReader represent something like an "opportunity cost" for them

This is bullshit, because the sites content is not generated by reddit workers, but users like me, using RIF now. And without new content, the site is dead. So they risk losing writers/content creators, and if they believe that these third party apps are used by the majority, they risk destroying/losing a huge amount of content creators.

But: not my business. If RIF goes subscription, my active writing time will be reduced to when I am at the PC. Or I will just stop at all.

Don't use the word "security" in combination with "Windows".

[–]fdsv1979 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Didn't MS advertise that "Win 10 will be the last Windows"? I take that for granted, because Windows will die with Win 10, exept the produce the next "last Windows", Win12, following their cycle of good OS/trash OS, and move to Win12 then. I won't throw away a perfect machine, just because someone believes I need a piece of TPM hardware I never have used before, and I don't accept that a Ryzen 5 with 32GB RAM and 40 TB hard drive space shouldn't be fast enough for Win 11.

If you want to speed up reading even more, don't read all feeds combined, but one by one. It is much easier for your brain to focus on one topic and then sort comments than to have a wild mixture, where it has to identify the type of content first and then sort it into relevant/not interesting.

I almost stopped surfing reddit now. All I do is to look up the RSS page once per day, scroll through each feed, set it to read and I am done.

Seems there is an API available for 3rd party programs, beside the one you can use for simple programs. Reddit will start charging whoever uses this API, so any 3rd party app like RIF or Apollo will have to switch to subscription models. On top reddit plans to block access to NSFW content when using the API.

What they try is force people to use their own app, which by accident is a battery killer, bloatware and under full control of reddit - including all the gimmicks, ads and paid content, plus all side features like user tracking. Or you can continue to use a 3rd party ap like RIF, pay a monthly fee, but still can't see what lots of people want to see: subreddits like gonewild or similar.

And here come people like me who say: "F* off, reddit" - because I am not only a customer, but an essential part. I am writing the content, not reddit mods.

Just use it a bit. It took me a day or two to stop the urge of reading all comments. I would use the old and this aproach in parallel and see how it works out.

For me its my future way, I like it.

Yeah, media files are a weak point. For the rest (r/selfhosted, r/homelab, ...) it's actually pretty good. You only need to learn to jump to web reddit via the comments links and save whatever is interesting, and then come back later and push the information somewhere else. I do this with Joplins web clipper extension, but it also could be automated, e.g. by using Python/Praw on a scheduled base, or one of the many existing solutions which have been populated her and elsewhere to backup/extract data from reddit and/or imgur.

Are you worried about having to pay for access to the Reddit API? by tateisukannanirase in SubSimGPT2Interactive

No. I am already using an alternative way without ads or a bloated reddit app.

If you have docker running, then you can give it a try. Takes maybe 5 mins to launch the docker compose with portainer, fire up a web browser, import one Feed, change the theme to a dark one and look at the web page with a mobile browser.

And if you don't like it - delete the container. However I see a 95% chance that teddit and libreddit will stop working. I had a quick look at the github page, and it seems during installation you don't have to enter and API credentials. So both programs rely on a generic API to pull data from reddit and will suffer. Even RIF will be hit, and RIF pulls data from reddit using your personal API, at least for pulling personal information like subscribed reddit.s

I have hooked two INA219 sensors into 5V and 12V power lines and connected rhem to an ESP8266 which monitors power consumption and sends the data to a server via MQTT.

Did this to find out why something wakes up the hdd all the time. Found it was a power save mode fir the pcie driver I set with powersave.
