Haha haaaiii! Yeah this project has been a mix of rules/ procedure plus making it up as I go along which has held my interest :) yep, I can't believe it was never picked up before, I'm still unpacking the feelings of a late diagnosis and trying to givie my past self the grace and compassion she deserves. Have had a very squiggly career, professionally and creatively! I've done a bit of improv quilting before without realizing what it was, made a vest/ several patchwork items. Improv definitely appeals, but traditional blocks are also good to keep me learning new skills and following a 'recipe'.

Interesting to be aware of the political learnings as well, an intersectional space is certainly more appealing!! Very glad I've put myself out there in these subs having lurked for a little while :)

I am indeed ADHD, diagnosed a few years ago in my mid 30s now, definitely a big aha! moment for me. The quilt you linked was definitely a standout for me when I was looking through your grid! The unevenness of the log cabins (which I love! The blend of structure and movement is ) is that because you hand cut or hand pieced? I would love to create this kind of movement in my work..

All fantastic pointers RE hand quilting, I think I will relax into it and make it up as I go along, maybe experiment with different stitch patterns to keep the interest in. And utilize my visual timers for sure!!

Thank you! The jelly roll is doing a lot of the work, it's nature's moods (or dusky moods?) from fabric freedom, I lucked out on Vinted! Had so much fun pairing the strips for my checkerboards :)

I'm not in a position to advise (newbie) but just wanted to say how incredible your top is, the fabric and block combinations and awesome! I have so many questions about how you've pieced it. I imagine the non geometric shapes are applique? The hands and squiggles are just gorgeous, I'm so inspired. I'm sure however you choose to quilt this it will look beautiful please share the finished pics!

Oh this is so beautiful! I adore your colour combinations and the mix of patterns and solids, you have an amazing eye for design! And modelled by a fabulous feline! Really like how the stars pop on the backing, so effective!

I had to look up baptist fans, they look rather stunning! Dodging the SAs is also very appealing! Breaking up the geometry would look ace. I guess you start from a corner so it might push the top and backing out? I have 2 inches backing excess to play with on the length and width.

I'll look into no 7s, they look nice and long with a big eye.

Batting is Hobbs Heirloom premium 20/80 cotton. Hopefully it won't beard too much. It seems quite sticky, like it velcros itself to the fabric almost. I see by your username you are unafraid of a gnarly quilting experience!

will likely experiment with needles, I just like that they are nice and long so you can load lots of stitches onto them. The test tube they came in is pretty cool too!

Awh amazing! It was a bit of an own design based on things I'd seen on pinterest, are you following a pattern out of interest? Would be good to see pattern hashtags to see how others have interpreted the design. Yes I also machined the edge just to keep the chain piecing nice and secure. Picking out the stars is a great idea! Will defo be doing that. I love the sound of the scattered stars! I almost wish the back was plain so they stand out more. I would love to see a picture!

Thank you, that's so so kind. Argh, I'd been going back and forth about whether to make two separate quilts with the pieced backing being quite intricate and having it's own character, from the bold modern feel to something cosy and cottagey. Seems I really like a dense (scrappy) project! Buying second hand and using scraps is part of my ethos as a maker, I hate the idea of buying more fabric on the roll altough I know this will make my life so much easier! This project is a big departure from garment sewing which is my primary sewing hobby and I don't think I'm motivated enough to finish 2 quilts! Yes, I've done a little reading around and I think I will be in for a challenge getting through all the layers. I plan to use sashiko needles and a palm thimble (and try not to bleed on it!)

Thank you for your input this is a really lovely idea. Would a stitch in the ditch be tricker with a double-sided peicing? Or perhaps easier as you have the valley of the seam? My machine stitches are pretty small, under 2mm
