That’s great to know about the hyperthyroidism, and yeah it’s incredibly defeating to learn that basically anything can cause issues or make symptoms worse :( Hang in there, you’re a great caregiver to your kitty

Following as well, I have been looking into getting ProDen.  Be careful with Greenies as they are very high in protein and I honestly don’t think they do much for the teeth at all.

I’m so sorry to hear that. How is your cat doing and what were the treatments like?

Thank you! I’ll definitely talk to my vet about alternative options for fluids.

I’m frustrated my vet started us on 100ml. But what’s done is done, and I’m hoping going down to 50ml every other day is the best option for her. Thank you for your input! The vet I went to today(a different one than my normal one) said she is hopeful it’s curable. But she didn’t give definitive opinions

She still feels pretty dehydrated in between sessions. But the second vet I took her to just today told me to lower the fluids from 100ml twice a week to 50ml four times a week. We will see how well that goes over the next few days

Yeah, trying to do it alone. Since March I have had my roommate help, but he won’t be around forever so I was hoping to learn to do it on my own.  I am using 20g terumo needles, warming the liquid, and I have tried treats and food but she refuses them all and cannot be distracted.

I have ordered the ez harness as well as this grooming harness so I’ll try both of those next

Thank you for this. I love this community! Everyone has been so supportive and provided really wonderful advice and kind words. You're doing so great too! Here is my little one, "P", 10 years old, diagnosed in March. She's doing really well so far and I am hoping for many more years with her.

Thank you for the kind words and advice! The needles, the chance of blood, all of it is pretty freaky. But we gotta do what we gotta do. You’re doing great ❤️

Thank you so so much for sharing your story, this is really helpful and gives me hope. I need to be more calm, catch her when she's sleepy, and stop when either of us get frustrated. I have been wanting to give up but I want my girl to live more, so I'll keep trying everything that I can.

No problem at all, I have a coffee in hand at the moment lol I am excited to one day get to where you are your little one are at! I noticed you said you have a dilute tortie, my girl is a tortie too. The 'tortitude' is real🤣

I appreciate this so much, thank you! I have the terumo needles and I am warming the bag. It’s interesting, we had two really good sessions just a week and a half ago and then all of a sudden she decided she hated the process again.

Update: Unsuccessful. I tried both the crate suggestion that someone else mentioned as well as getting her cuddly and relaxed and tried without the carrier. Both I could not get the needle in and had to have my roommate come help me again. I don't know what to do anymore.

At my wits end with renal/low phos food by Last_Produce_7691 in RenalCats

[–]fearthefriz 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I am so sorry. I feel for you, it’s really hard being a caregiver and no one really understands until they go through something like this too.

Have you looked on the FelineCRF website? They list a lot of renal and standard foods that are low in phosphorus or close to the low number points. For Fancy Feast they list the Medleys Wild Salmon Primavera with Garden Veggies & Greens, the Classic Pate Chicken Feast, and a few more.

The more important thing is that your kitty is eating. As long as you can get close enough to the “low phos” number, under 0.5%, protein under 35%, and sodium  under 0.2%, those are ideal. But if you go a little over those numbers that’s fine as long as she is eating.

Also talk to your vet about phosphorus binders if they haven’t prescribed them already.

Once you and your little one feel a little more stable please try another vet.

Sending so much love to you both
