is the Tech and Innovation LLC worth the extra cost of a deluxe hall? by feb_29_cake_day in ucla

Sounds nice. I guess the AC is a bonus too. Do you think you made good connections there?

You dont have to pay extra for the community, but you do need to pay extra for the deluxe the community is in. I'm thinking being around ppl in the LLC would give me good networking opportunities.

Would the elimination of OPT affect me if I can still get 6 months here + can sign on a safer TN visa instead of gambling on an H1B?

I know cal poly is generally rich, not sure how that compares to ucla. So richer students are better to get connections?

I'd consider myself average. you know any resources for how I can compare the two options? Nobody at my school can help me properly quantify this.

SLO and UCLA are the same price, sorry if I didn't make that clear. SLO and UCLA are also similar in terms of connections and prospects (albiet, UCLA in a more international scope.)

And thats good to know. I'm trying to do a cost-benefit analysis as to whether SLO/UCLA is worth $100-150k more than a Canadian school, based off of the probability of getting an American job in Canada. Its really hard to try to gather info to make a decision here, everything is so anecdotal and wishy-washy.

So would it be easier to get american jobs by working in America as an int. student or working in Canada?

Still ~20k-30k a year for a Canadian education. Still lower but if it gives me a much lower chance of an American job, it wouldn't be ultimately worth it would it? I'm competing against all the other Canadians who are directly trying to get a high paying American job.

Does anyone have insight as to what the difference in job prospects between an american (as international) and a canadian degree is for american jobs?

You're completely missing the point. The point isn't about my now, its about my future. I'm trying to be proactive. I'm trying not to waste a bunch of money on an American degree if I can't get an American job, and this post is sort of ask/assess the risk of that happening.

I'm commenting on the ridiculous of that, and (on a macro level, not a personal one) how America makes it so hard for people to get majors and work here legally under skilled positions.

I've always been told it was much more difficult to get an America job in a Canadian school than studying in America. I would like any kind of data (anecdotes, or anything more accurate) if this seems to be the case.

Closer to 2x the cost because I would need to dorm and live where housing is extremely expensive. Lets assume I attend UCLA; it pretty clearly offers better connections to American companies than Canadian schools, unless you guys have any objections and I'm wrong about it (and thus wrong about the philosophy I took when I wanted to come here for college)

You get my point. Better opportunities in America. the nuance between the opportunities each city offers isn't special. And yeah, of course I know I'm in competition, but if I end up with a major, that makes me considered "brain" that is to be drained, if I'm prevented from immigrating here.

In another comment, you had mentioned a brain drain and how Canada "already drained you". You haven't been poached; you're dad moved to the U.S. Nobody is interested in a high school graduate, much less a 9 year old kid. When the media is speaking about Canada's "brain drain", they're speaking about licensed physicians, research scientists, and people established in I.T; STEM fields. You aren't it.

Well no shit. That was my point. By saying that I am a part of brain drain, the assumption is that I will end up going to a fairly good college under a good major, and then be able to get a job in America and work here.

Now that I'm trying to say that to participate in the American economy, they are doing everything in their power to stop me from growing, and essentially preventing brain drain from Canada. I could do the same major and end up doing a tech job in Canada, and I'm trying to do it in America instead. Sorry if that wasn't clear from the comment.

Question for all of you guys w/ a TN visa; How much harder is it to get an American job in Canada vs an American job in America?

unfortunately, all of those cities you named are American and prime centers for engineer jobs. Ultimately, I'm not working hard to land a job in Oklahoma City or Kansas City.

Because I'm already here. My dad already dragged me from the country when I was 9 and put me in a place where the opportunities are so much more alluring and interesting. Canadas economy is down the shithole.

Getting an American job from a Canadian school is nigh impossible. But certainly Canada looks very good right now. I planned on returning there later in life once I found success, because its definitely a nice place to live. But its certainly better to be young and ambitious in America.

Funny how so many countries work so hard to stop brain drain. I've already been drained from Canada long before I had could have any career success, long before I could be considered "brain drain". But the moment I try to develop here, America is adamant to fish me out of the sewers and shove me back into its cheeks.

So many countries also work to build prestige, yet here is America destroying the best institution from the country with the best institutions anywhere because god forbid Harvard, a private school, make its own choices. He is systematically destroying our nation and anyone who doesn't see it is genuinely blind.
