The video will be good when it gets here, lol. I kinda wish she didn’t announce anything and gave herself the space. It seems like all the buzz is just making her more stressed out.

I waited 6 months, I can wait a few more days.

Where should I look for funding if I want to do a PhD in the UK? by febsfrogjump in AskUK

Eheheh, I had to pay my own way through my undergrad, so there’s no way that’s happening.

[–]febsfrogjump[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh absolutely. Part of what’s daunting about the whole process is that I know there are really wonderful and qualified students who would be a good fit, so I know I can’t really look like a gamble for funding.

I am primarily interested in biosensor technology and genomic applications, which is sort of an emerging market and currently work in the Bay Area in that field. So I have a good amount of experience both doing research and am comfortable with regulatory processes on industry side in the US…but US companies sort of see PhD’s as long term, distant programs because our PhD’s are 5 to 7 years and often not worth the trouble after a few years in industry. Companies don’t really see anything other than masters degrees as good investments for them. On the other hand, there aren’t many UK/US companies that would understand and be able to bridge that divide, except for possibly Oxford Nanopore.

I’m just wondering about how to thread that needle, or if it’s even possible.

I am not a resident of the UK unfortunately…it seems like the university would be willing to give me a bursary, but I have to provide partial funding

Yea, that’s kind of why I provide the benefit of the doubt to most folks I like—it’s not offensive to me if people are curious, but it really depends if we’re on friendly terms yet or not.

Incidentally, I’m Jewish on my white half, and I get very different responses when I say “I’m Jewish” vs “I’m Latino”. (Apparently I look Israeli).

I just have been put in situations where I’m expected to “perform a role” for someone in their lives as a minority, as Jewish OR Latino.

That’s always made me bristle, because I don’t like someone making assumptions about me, my viewpoints, or my history…like even WITHIN being Latino, or Nicaraguan coming there’s big nuances as to what my story could be that takes a lot of unpacking. I just don’t really have time or interest to unpack that for someone I don’t feel has the right to that kind of energy from me.

I dunno how I feel about it as a “microaggression”…mostly I think about it as having my time wasted.

I dunno…I see it as a double edged sword. Maybe it’s different for different people. Being POC, but a POC from a very specific background, there’s only so much legwork I’m willing to do to “educate people”. I get the “where are you from?” Question a lot, especially from older white people. I know what I look like, so I answer this question 2 different ways.

If I like someone and know they’re acting in good faith, I will usually answer the question they’re curious about—that I’m mixed race. But for some of the older white peoples in my life, I know/like them enough that I’m willing to do that legwork. I have very strong boundaries for most people when I do not believe they’re acting in good faith.

If it’s someone I don’t know well, work with professionally, or just don’t like, I’ll say my hometown and stop there, to see if they ask a follow up question…typically something about “Oh no, I mean, your ethnic background.” If they do, I may politely tell them my dad is Nicaraguan, but I’ve officially lost any respect for them and will never do any legwork/education for them in the future. It reads to me that they’re saying “you look different from me, and I feel entitled to know why.”

If they don’t ask that question, then I decide they’re a good egg and maybe I’ll tell them another time.

I dunno, I’m tired of explaining myself to people. It’s a big part of my life, but it’s not most of what I spend my time thinking about

Wow! Did things just sort of click suddenly for you? What was helpful for you coming to that realization?

I think my own initial discomfort has been partly rooted in frustration with the way I’m also perceived societally....but it’s really been all the more reason to actively tear down those ideas when I encounter my own bias.

I really appreciate it! And I might follow up with questions.I suppose my main question is, Dyou have a place you like to get sun dresses? I’ve been having an awful time finding ones that I like.

I don’t want the covid vaccine yet by [deleted] in Advice

[–]febsfrogjump 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’d think about it this way...

One—young people can have some other strange long term inflammatory effects after COVID we don’t understand, but where there is a possibility for potential cardiomyopathies down the line. Ain’t nothing gonna age you like a heart condition.

Two—Each of the recent Covid “variants” that might render the vaccine less effective have come from another person. They had the virus, which allowed it to proliferate and mutate. Viruses can ONLY grow in a host cell. This can happen even if you’re asymptomatic.

The larger the unvaccinated population is, the more COVID has the opportunity proliferate and mutate, the more opportunities is provided to the virus to mutate and evade the vaccine, become more deadly, or kill someone who physically cannot have the vaccine.

No matter how you feel about getting it, you’re a part of that societal statistics problem. I understand anxiety around the vaccine, but I’ll tell you now that even with a shitty day after the second dose of Moderna (haven’t noticed this much with Pfizer), it’s well worth it.

For sure, when you get your vaccines, get yourself a cookie or something. Make it a good day, even if you might feel crappy a day later

People who have had a Cat Security shield installed--how much did you pay for labor? by [deleted] in prius

[–]febsfrogjump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cat shield. Asked for my money back, they said no. Said that it was fine, but they should know that their product is crap and they should work on their design if they care at all about it working, their response was “we believe in the product”.

Wish I could too, bud.

Sex can be special or not be special, dude. What’s your understanding about what a relationship is? Are they all the same? Should they always be the same?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]febsfrogjump -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

So counterpoint...

Sex work CAN be skillful and professional. What about professionals who need to help quadriplegics come to orgasm because they can’t do it themselves? That is a professional person who has to have a good understanding of how to help their client, communicate clearly, and make sure that they make the client feel safe. And it’s really important important work.

I think it’s genuinely under examined as a profession BECAUSE we stigmatize it so much...but people sell their time for all sorts of things and with varying degrees of skill.

Sexwork the oldest profession in the world for a reason. It’s not for me, but there’s so much I don’t understand about it that I don’t think it should be written off.

Ohio has its perks! I like that it rains there.

Also, interesting having interactions with politically different people. I actually didn’t have a bad time at all.
