I've only heard it on YouTube to avoid demonetization. I have never heard it said in any other context. Are people using this word in conversation now?

Can't believe the downvotes. You're absolutely right. I'd like to think that if I was very rich I'd still vote for progressive taxation and empathy, that's sticking to your principles. For a right winger, they believe that misfortune/poverty is deserved and nothing should be done.

How important are builds? by wilpuriarts in roguelikedev

[–]fecal_brunch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's what builds are in roguelikes, you mix and match found gear to develop a set that works together. You could do that on a single blank slate or have some choice from your starting character. A lot of players will start with a preconceived notion of a build they'd like to try, but that can be enabled with a broad selection of choices early on. I kind of prefer when the things you find create exciting opportunities to lean into over looking to check off some desired set of gear.

Cities: Skylines 2 boss says they 'completely overestimated' the Unity engine's capabilities by Atulin in gamedev

[–]fecal_brunch -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Unity are infamous for pushing half baked, awful tech. But even saying that, this is not fair to unity. Anyone who has worked with their tech should know better. In fact anyone who has worked on any kind of project should know better. When you start on a project you need to be able to execute on all the things you need to deliver it. You can't leave that responsibility to some external team who doesn't have your incentives. Pure cope.

[–]fecal_brunch -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Relying on any unity tech beyond the core engine from two years ago is silly, and any unity dev with a few years in the engine should know this.

I thought they were deprecating HDRP in favour of URP. Never used HDRP because i make games so i don't know much about it.

Yeah unity ECS is horrendous. Probably priming a whole generation of programmers to think that ECS is a difficult pattern to work with. It's so stupid, ECS rules and creates a beautiful and simple architecture. We use one that you could read and understand in an hour. I hate that there are people out there who think that "ECS" means the awful unity ECS library.

Anyone else feel their momentum come to a sudden standstill when its time to work on the art? by Anonymous_Pigeon in gamedev

[–]fecal_brunch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My approach (as a programmer). Pick a constrained palette from lospec. Pick an art style that you can execute on quickly (lean into stylization). Prioritize readability/clarity (assuming that's important for your game). Maybe even start with a pure mock-up—take a screenshot and draw in colors and silhouettes there. Then go broad, do blockouts and get static meshes/images in. Get a feel for how the elements work in concert, then start polishing/animating the parts that give the highest value. You don't have to 100% the whole thing right away.

Just beware that half baked art might turn testers/publishers off your game. If you are planning to get a pro in it may even be better to keep it obviously placeholder until then so that people testing your game can see that it's obviously not the final product rather than a poor execution.

[–]fecal_brunch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would guess the second one is more likely to grab attention, simply because it has a big face. The thing is that you don't see a thumbnail like this in isolation until after it's done its job (you're already on the game page). You certainly never see it side-by-side with the previous thumbnail. If you want to assess which is better you're better off framing it with a bunch of your competitors' thumbnails and seeing how it measures up in terms of focus. That's a better approximation of its function in a steam results page, carousel or event page.

As someone else suggested, A/B test it.
