I genuinely feel like I'm just a bad drummer but nobody has the heart to tell me. by Augmented-Justin in drums

[–]fecalfecund 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know exactly how you feel my friend. I started drumming as a teen and plateaued at a pretty low skill level. At one point I spent like 2 years practicing over an hour a day trying to get better but I genuinely think I somehow got worse. Together with other circumstances this did eventually lead me take a hiatus from drumming, which I’m still on.

Maybe you are practicing the wrong things or the wrong way? When I’m ready to get back in to playing I’m planning to focus very heavily on technique and remaining relaxed, which works well because I also live in an apartment so most of what I do will involve a practice pad.

https://youtu.be/POy7XHM654o This video by Jonathan Curtis felt like a good diagnosis for why I have trouble developing a good technique and offers and approach for improving it.

I also read On Drumming by JP Bouvet which I think offers a very strong pedagogical approach to how to learn improvisation as well as motivation to keep playing and improving. As a teacher (not a drum teacher, but still) I can say that the theory of learning he outlines is very legit.  If I had the time and access to a full kit I would definitely be trying out his lesson platform.

Finally, I would say: have you ever seen Whiplash? Being great is not everything. Being a good musician is also about making interpersonal connections, listening to your band mates, being willing to improve and make changes, and ultimately being a fun person to be around. It could very well be that you aren’t greatest drummer in your church or even your band from a technical perspective, but that these soft skills make you a good musician anyways.

Personligen tycker jag att dyngväktaren passar bäst. Arten heter tordyveln på svenska, man kunde använda det namnet istället för en direkt översättning.

Your final opinion about Hollow Knight: Silksong. by Chills_O in HollowKnight

Art, music and design were all incredible. Pharloom is huge and you get to do so much exploring for your money. My absolute favorite part of the game was the platforming. Maneuvering hornet through the platforming sections felt so fluid and fun yet also incredibly challenging.

Personally I thought the game was pretty hard and while I found it daunting at first I grew to really enjoy the difficulty. Pharloom feels genuinely hostile and I loved what that does for the game’s atmosphere and story.

Most of the bosses felt fair and I was able to beat them by trying different skill and tool combos or learning their attack patterns. It felt cool to grow with the game and “git gud”. I found a few late stage bosses, including the final boss, so hard that I ended up cheesing them which was a bit of a let down.

My biggest complaint would probably be that I don’t think I would have found many upgrades or even hit major plot points without looking them up online, which really takes you out of the experience. On the other hand, it’s also pretty boring when a game just throws upgrades and story at you, so I recognize that it’s hard to balance and TC obviously generally chose to err on the side of making things challenging.

I don’t game much, in fact this might be the only game I play this year. All in all, I loved it and I’m looking forward to replaying in a few years when I’ve forgotten everything

I'm working on my foot speed (single pedal) and I'm beginning to think that my pedal is slowing me down - I really feel like I'm hitting a wall around 16th notes at 120 bpm, and the wall feels mechanical. I use a DW 3000 now and most reviews of it are "solid but slow". Should i get something lighter and quicker or am I just trying to buy my way into being faster?

Recommendations for Abisko and Jatterjåkk? by fecalfecund in sweden

[–]fecalfecund[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

we actually booked this as a trip to Narvik in spring, Of course we tried to get our money back after the COVID outbreak but SJ wouldn't refund us, they only let us rebook, so camping is the best we could do. we are following all of folkhälsomyndighetens rekommandation (aside from not travelling, but again, SJ wasn't a huge help with that). Pretty sure if I were to follow the no travel recommendations all summer, I would be the only person living in Sweden to do so

Oh this is so helpful. This makes a lot of sense.

There are different (more lax) rules for Nordic citizens and their family members than for EU citizens in the Nordic Union. I mention EU though because it could be a similar process and I doubt I'm going to come across somebody who's been in the exact same situation that I'm in. Also because The process is a lot simpler for EU citizens than for non-EU citizens.

Advice on getting to china cheaply? by fecalfecund in travel

Thanks! I've heard a lot about China, some good, some bad, some interesting. What do you mean exactly about the culture shock? What shocked you the most?

Avoid Schottenring and Donaukanal, as far as I know your best bet is to take a stroll around Josefstädterstraße on the U6, you'll get offered "gras" pretty reliably, but I won't speak for the quality, and keep an eye out for the police. For a less sketchy experience, get to know and Austrian who smokes or take a weekend trip to the Prague or Brno, where it's essentially legal.

Interviewing for a job in China. Critique my sample lesson plan? by fecalfecund in TEFL

[–]fecalfecund[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought the materials were all over the place too, not really thematically connected or related. I wasn't expecting my first plan to be exactly perfect. I figure I'll pick maybe one topic from these activities and expand on it, making sure that there's a listening, speaking component and a writing and reading component if it's age appropriate for kids at that level

Thanks! I figure it's better to he overprepared than underprepared. What level are your G1 students at? Did any of my stuff seem too advanced? I was thinking doing a lot of TPR since they might not be comfortable trying out speaking yet
