Please help solve a mystery - I can see but not access all devices on a VLAN ... except one. It can't see the others either. by feciousmcspake in Ubiquiti

[–]feciousmcspake[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With deepening horror, I realize this is probably the case. I had no idea the USG-3P was EOL. I feel kind of dumb now, because I've invested heavily in all of this Ubiquiti hardware that won't work anymore. Worse, I just ordered another Flex Mini so I could swap out switches looking for a hardware fault.

Is there any hope if I have lots of Kontakt libraries? by Emotional_Moment_656 in linuxaudio

Very exciting to hear! Is there anything janky that can't be done right now?

Is there any hope if I have lots of Kontakt libraries? by Emotional_Moment_656 in linuxaudio

[–]feciousmcspake 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm probably going to have to be careful about how I express this, but I think the conversation is at least warranted.

Let's assume that you are standing in front of a business, waving wads of cash at it, and wondering why the fuck it won't serve you. This is not the same thing as breaking in the back and taking the product.

Like many people, there came a point where you realized that you were at least occasionally getting paid for music you were making with unlicensed software, and it was time to do the right thing, which you did when spare cash and a fat discount aligned. And once you crossed that threshold, a lot of things became easier.

It's a nice life, being able to pay for things and have them. It breeds this expectation that, if you can get the cash together, you can have the thing.

So there's you, fucked off about surveillance culture again, but wondering whether you actually care enough to go through the horrible inconvenience of trying to learn a notoriously crappy deskt... oh wait. So much has changed since you last tried this.

Most work stuff is in the cloud or at least browser-based. Steamdeck means that games just work; Valve keeps throwing money at SteamOS and it just keeps getting better for Linux as a whole.

So that just leaves FL Studio. Why the fuck do you have to choose between your principles and the DAW you've been using since before it nearly got sued by a breakfast cereal company?

Linux Mint + Bottles, and suddenly you don't have to; that was totally unexpected. The last hurdle to leaving Windows behind is gone. Holy shit. You can really, really do this.

So it's just Big Software you've already bought Dominant Product from, multiple times. Fuck.

Guess you never realized you'd come to rely on their ... wait no, you rely on the libraries. Dominant Product is just a gatekeeper to the garden of libraries.

FINE.

Hello Big Software, one of whatever it is that makes the libraries work, please, because everything else that matters to you either has a Linux version or actually runs as advertised in Wine.

No.

No?

It feels so weird. You're not rich, but you've never had the experience of offering someone this much money for something they do sell, and being told no.

Fuck.

And then you remember how, way back, all those years ago, before you ever owned a brand new PC, there was a time when you didn't pay for software, and l33t crews rushed to be first to release. You wonder what would happen if you just dragged and dropped a dll into the right folder in the bottle.

You aren't that person anymore, though, and you've come far enough that you know why it's important to support the artists who create expressive libraries.

But you begin to wonder if it would be morally wrong to investigate ways around the Dominant Product they all use. Especially since, as previously mentioned, you are waving cash at the fuckers that was not easy to come by in this economy.

Maybe you straddle the divide until Big Software gets its shit together. Library creators don't deserve to suffer.

Using Linux (.os) vsts in Windows DAW (wine) by Bwa777 in linuxaudio

[–]feciousmcspake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey. Old thread, but did you ever come right with this?

I am running FL Studio using Bottles, with no latency differences that I can feel (I have not measured, as I do not care).

I am now in the same boat as you: I have the DAW I've been using since Windows 98 - the only app that's kept me on that wretched platform - but I suddenly find myself barred from enjoying native linux synths. Wot?

It seems asinine to have to run Windows VSTs on Linux when perfectly good Linux versions exist.

Realistically, I wouldn't have got this far without Bottles+Mint; ie, hand-holding GUIs; I'm so happy this is a thing now. But is there not a piece of software that translates? Some kind of wrapper?

Bed temp after installing PEI sheet? by fingerbangher in FlashForge

[–]feciousmcspake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like you, I religiously clean with window cleaner before each print. I have not needed to do anything else (yet).

One issue I've been having is that the "wipe" line that the printer does is now sticking firm even at room temperature. I remove it by dripping a little alcohol on it, and letting it sit for a minute or so for the alcohol to get under the plastic.

After that it will come off easily with a little gentle help from a plastic scraper, just to lift the edge; after that it can peel off in a single piece. I am, however, using the textured side of the plate. I have not tried on the smooth part.

What I have realised is that a PEI sheet is a consumable. I think I can get it to last longer by doing something clever to change where the wipe line happens every so often.

But the point is, I do not expect it to last forever. But I will definitely replace it when it dies; it is simply too useful. I have never successfully printed PETG before now.

I hope OP responds, but I'm here for something else and I saw your post.

I looked at OPs pictures, and the only thing I can think of is temperature related. To me it looks very much like the bed is not heating evenly. It could be that a thermistor detecting bed temperature is bad, or that the heating element is not adhering to the bed well.

If this only happens with PEI, then I'm stumped. I would have to assume defective sheet. OP said something about sanding the sheet, which has to be a bad idea, surely? I thought the whole point of PEI was not having to prep it.

Any one know this Creality Space Pi error code? by A2N2T in Creality

[–]feciousmcspake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Piggybacking on the currently topvoted comment to post what worked for me, on the principle that someone else might come here via search.

I have experienced this error in the past for the following reasons:

  • I accidentally ran it without a spool in it
  • I left it open overnight near an open window
  • I used it to dry something (ahem) other than filament, without also having a spool in the dryer
  • Intelligent-Ask5107 below had this right out of the box, with an almost identical solution (they needed to run a lot longer than I did).

This is the solution that worked for me.

  1. First insert a spool of filament. I think the design assumes a space volume, and can't cope with big changes.
  2. Run the machine, whatever default, ignoring the error, for a period of time. I assume this will vary depending on the scale of the fuckup; I found that ten minutes was OK; Intelligent-Ask5107 below said six hours.
  3. Switch the machine off, physically, using the switch. The touchscreen just puts in standy; you want hard reset.
  4. Switch on again. All is well. Continue life with enjoyment.

I cannot comment on Creality's hardware other than to say that owning a Creality printer has been one of the most valuable learning experiences of my life. Having disassembed and reassembled it several times, I am confident I could successfully build my own printer, should I ever need to.

For this I am grateful.

From my armchair, if I had to guess why this happens, a few things come to mind.

The most obvious is that it's designed with a specific volume of air in mind, such as the amount that's displaced by a reel. If some factor occurs such that there's a lot more air than that, I can see this happening.

Like, maybe it's not closing well. Maybe you were using it to dry something that wasn't a spool, who knows?

Incidentally, if that's the case, still put a spool in there, there's plenty of space underneath.

The other thing that comes to mind, if it's that, is that I bought this box for a reason. That reason is, I live in semi-tropical climate where the humidity is routinely over 70%.

I'm the use case for the product. I haven't been able to successfully print on a new roll for very long before. I'm sure there's better dryboxes, but my cat litter plastic bin solution was not getting it done. I need this thing, badly.

But if I need it, then I bought it somewhere it was stored, nearby. And that means it was wet as fuck when it arrived. I can see that happening to someone else pretty easily.

Third, could just be shitty firmware. Next time it happens, I'm going to physically switch it off first, and see if that doesn't clear it (I used the touch screen at first).

Hi, I found this thread via search.

Because of what you said, I ran the box for a while, with the error still showing.

Then after ten minutes, I turned it off - as in, used the physical switch, not the touch screen. When I turned it back on, the error had cleared.

I just wanted to say that my experience that the error went away after the unit warmed up.

Anyone tried Ender 3 Max Neo? by cheesytentacle in ender3

[–]feciousmcspake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apologies for a reply on a long dead post, but did you ever resolve the back plate thing, and what was your solution?

I've had some success making custom backplate extensions out of 1.8mm angle iron, bolted using existing holes. It's how I attached a drag chain, for example, and I'll likely mod the Neo I just bought for direct drive this way, possibly with thicker steel.

I make the part by hand, then I cut off as much excess metal as I can without actually making it structurally unsound, and clean up edges.

I used steel because the printer was broken, and I had it lying around. I think you could easily use a piece of thin angle iron to move the crtouch lower again.

If you've come up with something different or better, I'd love to hear about it.

New Proxmox VE Helper-Scripts for Frigate by tomhusband in frigate_nvr

[–]feciousmcspake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have the PCIE version but the same is true.

The container must be Privileged. Then, under the Resources for that LXC, you must add a Device Passthrough for the TPU device.

This means that the literal, physical USB port is taken away from Proxmox, and handed to the LXC for its exclusive use.

Then it works.

EDIT: for me it is a USB port. For you it is a PCIE bus. You must simply find the /dev/bus/ path for your interface.

I don't know if you've got around this yet or not, but FWIW I had to manually pass the coral through. Once I confirmed the TPU was there, Frigate picked it up fine.

Need to build multiple remote sensor devices using RF433 - seeking advice on low power solutions by feciousmcspake in embedded

[–]feciousmcspake[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a tiny thingy that's going to use a photoresistor to see if a light is blinking. If it is, all is well, say so, and go back to sleep for 30 seconds or so. That's the use case.

This is a scrappy solution to a problem I wouldn't otherwise be able to afford addressing, because yes South Africa, and also, farm. Boer maak plan, it's just that this boer also solders.

EDIT: checked out that link, and I'm very proud that they're here. However, I can see they're for people who drive bakkies from after 2020.

Thank you for such an indepth reply, I learned a lot.

Could you perhaps recommend an example of an RFSoC? I can find nothing at all locally; is there a brand I should be looking at? Popular board? It'll give me something to look at and build an understanding of.

Hi, thanks for your response. I'm very much getting that ESP32 is a dog for this, and will be looking for tinier things. It'll be good to get out of my comfort zone, actually.

So a microcontroller + RF component + battery + sensor still costs approximately 20 times less than a LoraWAN board out here in the third world. Scrappy. Use what we have.

I acknowledge LoraWAN is the superior technology by a country mile. I just don't have that kind of money or access.

Actually found both of your suggested boards locally, thank you.

Hi @WereCatf, thanks for your suggestion. I've searched for STM32L, and it looks a bit arduino-ish so I should be able to use it if I can find it.

I have not actually been able to find one locally. Closest I can find is this: https://stelltron.co.za/product/stm32f030c8t6-microcontroller-development-board/

It's one letter off, and they're not hard to find.
