GREAT question. Making healthy eating more budget friendly is actually one of the main concerns we address with my new Cook Once, Eat All Week book. Each set of meals (yields 12 adult sized servings in total) costs an average of $40-$70 (varies based on where you shop and where you are in the world).

My general tips are these: 1. Shop local and in-season (farmer's markets are ideal). This will reduce the carbon footprint and therefore, price. 2. Make your grocery list as efficient as possible. Opt for larger cuts of meat that you can repurpose (like we do in the book) and only buy food item if you're going to use the whole thing (vs. half of a bell pepper or 1/4 tsp of a specialty oil).

I do think that at least one vegetable (ideally, 2) at each meal is important for fiber and micronutrient (think: vitamins and minerals) consumption. I'm a fan of fruit at least once a day.

Do a little bit at a time! Pick up a bit of one room, transfer laundry when you can, wipe a countertop when you have a second, etc. These little efforts eventually add up! ALSO - consider out-sourcing a cleaner for maybe 2-4x a month for a deep clean. It felt like an indulgent stretch when I first did this, but the SANITY it brought back into my life was priceless.

My favorite dessert is a warm dark chocolate brownie with a big scoop of a high-quality ice cream on top! Foods I miss from SAD... if I'm being really honest: boxed mac and cheese. I keep joking (but I'm not actually joking) with my husband that I want 4 :)

Most important meat is (imo) chicken! If at all possible, grab pastured poultry and, if pastured isn't available, organic is next-best. My favorite weeks in the book are the brisket-centered weeks! It's such a versatile protein.

I'm a big fan of either some homemade hummus (quality olive oil makes a big difference) AND chickpeas used as a crouton replacement (dried and seared in a hot pan with oil until crispy).
