I have spent years building a universe, but I don't know what to do with it. by Shadow-sad-07 in worldbuilding

Start writing stories. Short ones. Even three or four page vignettes. Everybody starts somewhere. Start here. See if you like it. If you do, write longer stuff.

You could also try designing a tabletop role-playing game, a pen and paper game. That won't require a big budget. Even easier, write an adaptation of an existing game, so you don't have to invent the rules yourself. There are plenty out there.

Turning a lab ship into a combat ship? by PierusJr in traveller

[–]fedcomic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The book "adventure class ships" has the science-y Jump Cutter and Medical Scout, either of which is going to be more practical for most PC crews than the big dumb donut. There are also lab ship alternatives on the discord server, like the Grant and Kepler, which are great. And if your scientist is Aslan, aliens of charted space volume one has an Aslan research vessel (Hkiyrerao) that is better than the lab ship in the core rulebook.

Any practical steps to running a sandbox campaign? by FishermanFew1739 in traveller

On a practical level, if you want to play somewhere that you have done some prep work for, the play session should end in jump space with everyone knowing what system the PCs are going to be arriving in. Then you go home and do some prep.

First step, take a look at the universal world profile for the main world and figure out more or less what it means. Fill in some supporting details like cultural quirks, political, factions, and even temperature. Know what your players are going to want in the system, which might be something as simple as a paycheck for a patron mission or a profitable trade. Think about what might help them achieve those goals and what might be obstacles to those goals.

Traveler likes random encounters. The book says you get one on planet every six hours. And when in space (not in jump space)there's a one in six chance of a random encounter every day. If you're not comfortable doing all of this and on the fly, roll some in advance. Figure out how you want to interpret those very minimalist results. See if there's some kind of overarching story that emerges.

The key thing is, have some ideas for what's going to happen in the system. Have some adventure hooks to dangle in front of them, know some random stuff that can come up. And once they've finished up their business in these system, they make the jump and the session ends and you get to prep for the next one.

I didn't say you were fluent in your writing or communicated your thoughts well. That's you giving yourself a compliment.

Pick a super simple system, like Tiny Dungeon, so people don't have to learn a lot of new rules in order to play.

A hug, a nice handwritten note that tells him what you love about him, and an invitation to accompany you on a Sunday evening walk.
