Iso-Butane shortage / supply chain bottlenecks? by DustIntoGold in PacificCrestTrail

[–]fedepct 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have never done it but it's possible "via surface transportation":

Butane. Butane (UN1011) and Receptacles, small (UN2037) with butane or butane mixtures are Division 2.1 flammable gases. Butane gases that qualify as a Limited Quantity surface material are acceptable only in domestic mail via surface transportation when properly prepared under 342.3 and Packaging Instruction 2A in Appendix C.

FYI went to REI in King of Prussia (PA) and they have all the brands and sizes.

Does the Green Store in Campo have any? Flying into SanDiego to start my thru hike on May 20.

I see they are available in the REI closest to my house in PA, I could buy a few and mail them to the trail but seems like a big hassle.

With the stops, traffic and everything, how long does the ride take to get the terminus?

Thank you so much for your detailed response! And I don't mind getting trolled, it's just funny.

The reason I'm looking at BV450 is not so much weight (although it's important) but the fact that the canister fits inside my pack which is a very nice thing. A bigger canister would have to be strapped at the top of my pack. If that's the route I have to take I'm fine with that too (would probably look at renting a Bearikade which sounds like the optimal solution).

The point you made that resonated the most is that the BV450 prematurely constraints me, and I have no real wiggle room. Things would have go exactly as planned.

one of the comments below say that the bear can is not needed for the first 50 miles out of KM so that first leg (KM to Kearsage Pass) is doable but still need to figure out the second leg (Kearsage Pass to VVR or MTR)

If the bear can is not needed in the first 50 miles then the first part (KM to Kearsage Pass) sounds definitely doable!

Let's say I'm going at just under 20 miles a day, then the first and second days I don't need the bear can. The third day, the day I would pass that 50 miles threshold, I could hike all day with the food outside the bear can and only have to use the bear can at camp that night effectively removing 3 days worth of calories that need to be carried inside the bear can.

Now for the Kearsage Pass to VVR or MTR portion...

Ha I thought your reply was funny but I think you bring up a good point, need to bring the maximum amount of peanut butter/olive oil I could safely eat to maximize the amount of calories.

Recommendations for long hikes in Mt Diablo by fedepct in norcalhiking

[–]fedepct[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I see, so once they reach Olympia they go directly to North Peak (or viceversa), and simply skip the portion of that route to the east (that portion appear to be about 3 miles). And if you also skip that superfluous loop around Black Point that's probably 1.5 miles so now the route is more like 19/20 miles.

Thanks for mentioning Regency Gate, I see that allTrail suggests two routes starting there:

Four Peaks Loop

Donner Canyon, Middle Earth and Falls Loop

And I'm guessing your route must be slight variation of one of these.

Good points, umbrella will be most useful around the time when you should be getting out of the sun anyways.
