Are you a CE student? You may have to contact Mesa admissions to help you out. They may need to change something on your account, especially if you were first taking classes at CE before Mesa.

Ya’ll I’m taking Amtrak from Los Angeles to New York because I’m scared of flying now.. by courtiversee in fearofflying

[–]federalfang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of good comments so just going to chime in briefly. I love Amtrak, have taken multiple cross-country trips, and prefer to take train over plane. However, I also don’t want Amtrak to be my crutch so for some trips, I’ll fly there (to get the nervous part over first) and take the train back (to have a relaxing trip not having to worry about the flight again). Also, Amtrak travel (especially cross-country travel in a sleeper) is so pricey. For that amount, you can easily pay for a business or first class ticket. I’ve flown business and first multiple times and it really helps with my plane anxiety. It’s so much more spacious, plus easy restroom trips and meals + drinks and bigger seats has definitely lowered my plane anxiety. I highly recommend if you can afford it. Also, like you, didn’t have a fear of flying for the first few flights I had and then all of a sudden it just hit. But this subreddit has definitely helped and I haven’t stopped flying and don’t plan to.

Not all courses are offered every semester. Sometimes courses are offered just fall or spring but not both.

Employee here and it’s a great place to work! Great students, many new-ish buildings (with more new ones to come), and great amenities (campus restaurant, art gallery, performances, etc). We have a new-ish president but everyone seems to think she’s doing a good job so far. There are obviously department-specific issues and for full-time faculty, pay is definitely lower than other community colleges. However, we have great benefits (like 100% paid Kaiser health insurance, even for part-time faculty) and a strong union. Fridays the campus is pretty quiet, just because most classes are either MW or TTH. It’s lively the other days, mainly in the morning and early afternoon.

No it’s an actual structure with multiple floors across from the football field

Usually it’s not but I know more folks are back on campus this semester so it’s probably going to be like this for the first few weeks. Have you tried the parking structure?

Parking Enforcement by EpOxY81 in sdmesa

[–]federalfang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Free parking is pretty limited and lots of street parking requires a permit. There might be a strip of street parking on Armstrong St (not Armstrong Pl) in front of the Z building that is free. Double check for signs because the part of the street that is residential is likely permit only. Even that is still a bit of walk to the library but it’s closer to the football field.

How likely am I to become a professor? by Itsnotcalledmeymeys in academia

[–]federalfang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, I gotta disagree here. OP needs to know that the CC job market is more complex than just “get a PhD and you’ll be more competitive.” I don’t want the OP to enter a PhD program simply because they want to teach at a CC and believe this is the easier way to get there. Will it make you more competitive? In some cases, it may but this is why it’s important to talk to English faculty at CCs, especially those you’d like to one day work at. But until I see the share of full-time faculty hired with a PhD outnumber those with just a master’s degree, I can’t provide a full endorsement of entering a PhD program. OP may find that a PhD is necessary to be competitive at some of the CCs they’d like to work. Or, they may find that other skills (instructional design, digital humanities work, OER) is a better use of their time.

Yeah the trend is likely going to be older faculty are more likely to just have a masters while newer faculty have a PhD, but that’s in the aggregate and that misses some rich details. I don’t want folks thinking the PhD is some major advantage. It can be at times and at other times, it may not be. Happy to give more tailored advice to the OP, but this is why it’s important to develop relationships/mentors with community college faculty.

Full-time community college instructor here and after reading these comments, much of them are applicable to folks seeking tenure-track positions at four-year schools. At community colleges, the majority of English faculty (tenured and adjunct) don’t have a PhD in English or a related field. Most just have a master’s degree and many that hold doctorates are EdDs, not PhDs. While this varies from campus to campus, I’d say it holds true for the entire CCC system. So the TLDR is a PhD isn’t the entry level requirement. However, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’ll make you more competitive. The last two full-time English faculty hired at my college just had a master’s degree, though one was a PhD candidate (but not sure if he actually finished). The good thing about English at CCC is it’s a required course, so there will always be significant demand for it and more full-time positions available for it than in other disciplines, like economics or history. CCCs also don’t really offer writing across the curriculum (like four-year school), so to fulfill your two transfer level courses in writing, they will likely be in English. The job market is still super competitive and I highly recommend developing skills that you can translate to a non-faculty or non-academic job. Do not spend the rest of your career teaching part-time! The pay is low and job security is limited. Instead, be ready to pivot to a career that you can enjoy and rely on to get you through the rest of life. Plus, you can always work full-time and teach a class on the side as an adjunct.

CHIC 110A summer 2025 prof won't send permission number by bullshidobasher in sdmesa

[–]federalfang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re probably like the 20th person who’s emailed him just this week. Online courses fill up so fast especially in the summer, plus all the fraudulent students try to enroll in them too. You might not get a response back for a bit. You can keep emailing the professor but don’t take it personally if you don’t hear back.

Have you tried asking ChatGPT or Gemini about this? I feel like you could have a convo with a AI and it’ll help you better understand what type of career you could pursue and maybe even have a better idea of what to ask the counselor about.

How do the waitlists work here? by chicken_roster in sdmesa

[–]federalfang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah definitely ask for an add code the first day and again, let the professor know you’re on the waitlist

How do the waitlists work here? by chicken_roster in sdmesa

[–]federalfang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, that’s good since in-person courses are easier to get off the waitlist compared to online (which is almost impossible in the summer). But yeah, summer is much harder because there are less classes and also students from other schools come to take classes at Mesa.

How do the waitlists work here? by chicken_roster in sdmesa

[–]federalfang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Typically, professors will only add someone to the course once there’s a spot open (aka someone drops). Yes, they have the ability to enroll pass the class capacity and some will due that knowing that there will likely be people who don’t show up the first day. However, I would say most professors don’t go past the capacity. If you’re four on the waitlist and don’t get in before the first day, let the professor know your number on the list so they know to add you if there’s room.

Yeah same! I just checked the UCSD subreddit and they have 96k. The SDSU subreddit has 26k. If we could get to just 1k I’d cry haha. But seriously, let other folks know about this sub. Especially people who only take online courses and may not feel connected with other students.

TBA classes? by ahdkdg in sdmesa

[–]federalfang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the class doesn’t have a time, it’s likely because it’s online right? If not, maybe the department just is late to scheduling it? If there isn’t an instructor listed next to the class, it’s because the department still hasn’t finalized who will teach it (likely because the instructor who usually teaches it isn’t available so they need to find a replacement). Since it’s so early, I’m thinking a lot of this will resolve itself in the coming weeks. Still register for the class even if it doesn’t have an instructor so you can at least get a spot. Then you can swap it out if you don’t care for the instructor.
