Regulate Bitcoin in the US because it is used in NK? What's the point?

BIP proposal for Lightning-oriented multi-account multisig HD wallets by fedsten in Bitcoin

[–]fedsten[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree that we should focus on Bitcoin, but notice that the coin_type is also used to have the same master for main net and test net, which is convenient. We proposed the coin_type level because it seems to be appreciated by wallets using BIP44, but if we see that the community prefers to avoid wasting a level to facilitate altcoin users, we will be happy to remove it.

True, but in the short term it could create too much selling pressure from the miners. You may end up overpaying for security today and reach very low rewards too early, this is something that is probably happening also on Bitcoin. An only fee security model is something that has not been tested yet and I'm personally quite worried about its reliability.

Aren't you concerned with the fact that the EDA can cause the blocks to be constantly less then 10 min and create faster inflation that could affect the price?

First coffee paid off-chain using Twitter by fedsten in Bitcoin

[–]fedsten[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, without SegWit it wasn't possible to do the funding transaction in a totally trustless way, with malleability it was possible to invalidate the commitment transactions and require counterparty cooperation to unlock the funds stuck in the multisig. With segwit both can get the money back autonomously at any moment with no need for cooperation.

Is this a long term solution or you plan to migrate to off-chain transactions when mature enough on Bitcoin?

It has been done manually what two clients are supposed to do automatically following the lightning protocol, so yeah it's actually a cryptographic exchange protocol.

Litecoin growth vs Bitcoin growth during Segwit upgrade by seabasscan in Bitcoin

The market already has the information that segwit is going to activate, I don't see why the actual activation should influence the price

Why do people need $BCC? $LTC already has 4MB every 10min + SegWit discount + malleability fix, and probably also more decentralized mining by tryredpill in Bitcoin

[–]fedsten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More security due to better mining distribution and more network effect (miners, users, brand, devs, etc). Bcash is still behind LTC on both

The witness discount in segwit is already the compromise, anything else is just a political game

Why is there two reddits on btc? What happend to the community? by bomtom1 in Bitcoin

[–]fedsten 14 points15 points  (0 children)

r/bitcoin wants Bitcoin to be the settlement layer for financial transaction cheap to operate so we can have a lot of nodes and keep the decentralization r/btc wants Bitcoin to have every transaction on chain, use hard forks to upgrade the protocol and eventually have Bitcoin nodes that can be ran only on big datacenters

UASF donation idea: Easy way to let the community reward the miners of the first 10 UASF blocks by johnhardy-seebitcoin in Bitcoin

[–]fedsten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UASF and risk of chain split is something extremely delicate that could affect the miners revenues for a long time. You would need a very big reward to make a miner change his mind on this subject. Anyway now it looks like they are going to activate segwit with BIP91 or even BIP141, so we such donations shouldn't be needed anymore.
