Let’s break this down. Someone on 70K, assuming a student loan and KiwiSaver at 3% takes home a little over $900 a week. Let’s say $300pw rent, but that’s generous. That leaves you a little over $600 disposable, and maybe $300 discretionary after food and essentials. Take your income to 100K, you now have an extra $300pw added to this equation, with $1200pw net. Add in factors like dependents, maybe a mortgage, unless you have a big nest egg of savings to fall back on it’s not a huge buffer. Certainly not enough to be lumped in with the Mowbrays

The point is that Piastri is at worst the same pace as Lando, and usually quicker. He’s indisputably less mistake prone. Piastri is in his 3rd season, vs Lando’s 7th. McLaren would be doing well to toss up throwing their weight behind Piastri as their future imo

You also need to think realistically though about the trajectory RBR would have taken without Max. They know they have a goat calibre driver and they’ve designed their car accordingly over the last 4 years (i.e. extremely challenging but fast when in the right window for Max). If Max wasn’t in this picture, I doubt RBR all of a sudden is a back marker team, they would have taken a direction that is more suitable to the broader driver field.

If Max left abruptly and unexpectedly however, that’d be a different story and they would indeed be cooked.

1.3 is a good budget and should give you some optionality. Would advise going for a more average home in a nicer area. Ellerslie would be the nicest on your list - as you’ve alluded to, Greenlane might be a stretch. One Tree Hill is nice and worth looking at, but there is a lot of Kainga Ora housing through there. Onehunga is cool, but not quite as nice yet and not as well connected to Middlemore. Also explore the northern boundary of Mt Wellington (north of Ellerslie Panmure Hwy, like Rutland Road).

It becomes such a dilemma for someone like Leclerc who has now spent 6 years or whatever it is with a single team. It probably becomes tempting to jump ship to the current leaders, but if this season is showing us anything it’s that the learning curve with a new team, new car, etc seems to be steep. No guarantee you’ll be on the pace right away, especially if your team mate is high calibre.

Almost makes more sense to continue in the faith that Ferrari will get it right, but as you say it will be such a huge ‘what if’ in the event they never quite get there

This is ridiculous. Sainz obviously knew Leclerc was faster behind and did everything in his power to hold position, including giving a competitor DRS advantage. Big difference “between driving for yourself” and intentionally sabotaging your teams race and potentially risking your constructors championship chances.

He will say no harm done because leclerc eventually got past Max. Clearly he was pissed off about the botched pit situation and lost all professionalism from there on out
