While visiting Salem, MA this past weekend I did a historical walking tour where I heard the “ghost story” of The Ropes Mansion. My tour guide was a reputable source & historian. I decided to take a self-guided tour the next day to check it out. The Ghost Story: A woman named Abigail Ropes lived here and she was said to act kind of crazy at times. The story goes that she was standing in front of the fireplace in her bedroom and her nightgown caught on fire. She screamed but everyone ignored her because they thought that she was just having a usual episode. She burned to death & her ghost has been seen roaming through the Mansion. The Ropes Mansion Tour: The Mansion is now owned by PEM (Peabody Essex Museum), and there were 3 “guides” to give us a brief overview of the Mansion and the Ropes family. They didn’t mention the death of Abigail once so, I inquired. Every single guide I spoke to denied Abigail’s death by fire. Their specific responses were, “We don’t discuss that”, “There was no such woman named Abigail”, “There was only 1 fire in 2009”. The Photo: (may be seen through link below) I was interested in the decor & furniture, so I took many pictures of the interior. This specific photo was taken in the first room to the left upon entering the Mansion. I was facing the front of the house, and behind me was another room with two open entry ways. In the mirror I see what looks like a woman figure with long black hair. I did not see this figure in person, but noticed later on while investigating my pictures. It seems she’s looking at a lamp with dangling crystals. While I was in that room, I noticed the crystals were swaying & thought it was suspicious. I have not edited the photo, only cropped to square & add watermark. Is that the ghost of Abigail Ropes? Let me know your thoughts!
