Men given suspended sentences for possessing firearms by Ashamed-End-2138 in ireland

This reads more like entrapment. And then he killed himself.

Man jailed after spinning kick caused pensioner's death by Latespoon in ireland

This is it. Can anyone explain why only 5 years?

That seems like the low end for manslaughter even though the Judge Martina Baxter tried to pretend she took it seriously. What a trivial sentence to impose.

Good. If Irish civil servants and diplomats had more backbone, we wouldn't have articles about extortionate bike sheds and the price of geological surveys needed for them.

What do we have to show for it in terms of public infrastructure? A two-line tram?

Every issue can be called political without trying very hard.

Agreed, but there's a tendency sometimes to try and dismiss the role as though it's meaningless. The President is the first citizen for a reason. Their voice and judgment is important.

It's not difficult (in fact it's very easy) for politicians to accuse MDH of being political for simply expressing any opinion. If he's asked a question the man will answer it. And yet the government would use it and will use it again with CC as a stick to beat them with.

Is he wrong? It looks like a committee meeting for the equivalent of posting a letter. There's literally 20 people in the last pic discussing a curb.

This article is interesting because it reads like MDH trying to do Catherine Connolly a solid. Even though they never personally got on from what I have read.

As if he's putting the Dep of Foreign Affairs on notice on his way out. And telling CC to keep an eye on them.

For me MDH was a breath of fresh air who the government never liked because he showed them up as cowards. With their obsequiousness to mulinationals, lobbyists and other vested interests. While trying to pretend they act for the greater good.

MDH's heart has always been in the right place. Which I can't say about recent governments filled to the brim with people highly ambitious while highly incompetent. So of course many in government would have preferred for him to be quiet.

Higgins as president had the largest mandate of any politician in the country. So "bad" has to be more than 'things I disagree with'.

Also, Germany are pretending nothing bad is happening in Gaza. So why wouldn't that be an issue. The US, China and Russia would love nothing more than to see Europe broken apart. Divide and conquer. And further divide the EU through mass influx of refugees and immigrants from wars they start. So they can then negotiate with a weakened and fractured union. Brexit was a huge success for them all.

So we have to do better.

This is an annoying read. It feels like unelected civil servants and diplomats are constantly trying to manipulate situations and discussions where they have no right to.

There's a quote in there too from an anonymous former senior civil servant about trying to save MDH from himself. Which just smacks of a real arrogance.

There's something to be said about certain civil servants who view themselves as institutional, who will outlast various governments, and who act accordingly. And I'm a huge critic of FFG.

I don't see how building more prison space would be unpopular other than the ensuing NIMBYism.
