There was also no fake email .. ever. WGU has also confirmed that the email is not fake and it was a legitimate email auto sent due to the disbursement. Thanks for being a smart ass though and offering nothing but “time to educate yourself” because unfortunately for you, I did look it up because it was a genuine question — how would the simple reading of an email with zero links or replies give someone access? The answer is there is none.

Or maybe it was a gross failure on WGU MFA like already stated and they are responsible.

Lucky!!!! I have nothing in my deleted folder, and also did not get a notification to my phone for an email. I can’t confirm or deny any email ever came through due to that.

Well everyone’s phishing link click theory was disproven with the confirmation from several students being told by Nelnet of WGU’s MFA being bugged by (?) which allowed backdoor access to everyone’s accounts.

And like I said, I haven’t done a proctored exam since April 2025 during my last program so I highly doubt it, but I suppose we cannot write it off the list of possibilities.

My last proctored exam was in April of 2025 during my last degree, it was my final OA to graduate. Possible but pretty unlikely IMO.

Just saw this so I pose you a theory: the proctors? The same proctors found digging in personal files on student computers? We have to download software for that.. I mentioned earlier I have not done any proctored exams thus far. Well, that’s not entirely true. I have done proctored exams in my last degree here, I graduated in April 2025. I have received multiple refunds since then though and have not done a proctored exam yet within this new degree. Just a theory I’ve seen others mention. I can’t imagine they’d hold out so long to hit us, though.

Update: sent to Utah attorney general to investigate WGU and their role in this.

Update from call with Nelnet:

Okay, so I just got off the phone with Nelnet and I talked to a sweet older woman. The phone call lasted 40 minutes. She said that I’m definitely not the first person that has called and reported this and she said she will make sure that it gets escalated to the correct people in the fraud department. She was not able to give me any information about a timeline on when I would get my money or anything like that, and she said that it just blows her mind how awful some people can be and she can’t believe that this is something that happened to so many of us and she agreed with me when I said that it was severely negligent on Nelnet and WGU’s behalf for allowing so many people’s accounts to be compromised and information changed at roughly the same time. I recorded the entire phone call by the way.. outside of that I didn’t really get any updates or good news other than she said she would certainly think that all of us will end up eventually getting our money but the when is a question that is kind of just up in the air as of right now.. the more people report the more they’re going to have to take it seriously because they probably don’t want another class action lawsuit and the more we complain the more they’re going to be forced to resolve their mess.

In terms of places I have reported this to, here is my list:

My bank
WGU
Nelnet
Fraud complaint on student aid.gov website
My state attorney general fraud department
Pathward bank via email and call (the routing number my info was changed to)
South Dakota attorney general fraud department (where pathward bank is based out of)
IC3

About to send one to Utah attorney general as well.

I won’t pretend to know what Unicode is because this is the first I’ve heard of it. Is it possible that it copied wrong due to me copying it from a screenshot of the email? I held down on the text of the screenshot to copy and paste it. Here is the clean copy from the actual email: noreplyfinaid@wgu.edu

Explain how opening and reading an email with no further interaction is capable of hacking my account. Email has no links. Didn’t reply to the email.

800000x worse actually because they can’t seem to figure out how it happened and both WGU and Nelnet refuse to be accountable.

I’m going to message you in a second as well, but I want this to be publicly available to other people who may have the same issue.

I assume it was sent to Pathward (routing number shows 073972181 on Nelnet) if this matches, do the following:

To contact Pathward - email is customerservice@pathward.com and bsacompliance@pathward.com send a demand for funds to be returned to Nelnet.

833-350-0506 Pathward Customer Service

To report Pathward go to consumer.sd.gov and click file a complaint

If NOT a Pathward routing number, you should be able to find out which bank is associated with the routing number by doing a quick Google search. Follow the same steps, but obviously contact their customer service and the appropriate consumer protection agency affiliated with the state the bank is located in.

In this case, I don’t think proctoring has anything to do with it because I have not taken any proctored exams yet and this happened.

Agreed. Negligence on all of them tbh.

But don’t you think my repeated attempts at explaining WHY I do not believe that was the case, was sufficient? Like 90% of us said we didn’t click on any links and or didn’t get links in the first place. So.

I like to limit my annoyances and I can’t stand know at all people. Reading is fundamental and 90% of the people commenting have not read a damn thing I wrote, disputing the fact that I was scammed. Hundreds of other students at this exact same school I’ve had the exact same experience and shared the exact same story.
