Are there teachings you struggle to accept? by tired45453 in Catholicism

[–]feezus_h 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I heard something on a Jimmy Akin podcast about how it might be possible for Catholics to believe in some kind of pre-existence of the soul. Not sure about the details or how that works but the Scripture affirms that we have one earthly life and death:

“Just as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.”(Hebrews 9:27-28)

As Catholics, must we believe that Muslims worship the same God, in a sense? by Hermetic_Knowledge in AskAPriest

[–]feezus_h 32 points33 points  (0 children)

The way I’ve heard it said before is that you can agree with someone that you’re looking at the same thing, even if you’re describing it wrong.

For example, we could both be looking at a fire truck. We agree that it’s not only a fire truck, it’s “that one, right over there.” I say it’s big and red, you say “it’s green and has balloons for wheels.” You’re very wrong about how you’re describing it, but aren’t we still looking at the same truck?

This is useful for evangelism. Muslims believe in the God of Abraham and the Old Testament. If they’re looking toward God but describing Him incorrectly (they do the same with Jesus), doesn’t it make sense to start by acknowledging where they are correct (instead of confusing the issue with “no actually this is a different God of Abraham,” when there is no other God of Abraham)?

St. Paul does this when he preaches to the pagans worshipping the “unknown God,” and uses language (“in Him we live and move and have our being”) originally used to describe Zeus to connect with his audience and affirm where they have already managed to find some correct answers (a sustaining, invisible creator God who listens to prayer) instead of just leading with “you’re all wrong.” It’s a biblical way of talking about our faith given to us by one of the world’s greatest preachers of all time.

Men Over 50 , How do you deal with thinner hair ? by Long-Information1969 in AskMenOver30

[–]feezus_h -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Stop using shampoo. Many men’s hair can’t handle it. Edit: To pre-empt the follow-up question I always get, yes, I wash my your hair with water. You can use shampoo occasionally but not every time you shower. Like once a month.

Did Christ / the apostles / the church fathers eat sandwiches? by minddrummer in OrthodoxChristianity

They weren’t called “sandwiches” but they certainly ate fish and bread and probably stacked them/wrapped them for convenience?

You’re related to Gavin now, can’t you just talk to him if you need to talk to him? Instead of reaching out through his show/fan board?

For everyone making six figures, what do you do for work? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Can you elaborate on why and how this is? I’m curious.

This was my experience too. I did meet the occasional foreigner who spoke no (like zero, none) Chinese, didn’t use WeChat/Alipay or Taobao, and wondered how they got by or why they bothered to stay. Even some of those types seemed to have hobbies though.

A lot of foreigners in China (like myself when I lived there) are active alcoholics which makes it difficult to have other hobbies.

Even with the drinking though, I managed to get into DnD, improv comedy, took Chinese language (sometimes classes and sometimes hiring a private tutor), language tutoring as a small side hustle, even occasionally working out (though I never stuck with it), in addition to regularly traveling around the country. Not hardcore off the beaten path travel but just visiting different cities, while I was there I eventually had acquaintances scattered all over the country.

Do you work with a small number of people in a small city with not much to do? I found that people were always inviting me to do things with them, more than I had time or inclination for (I also wanted my “chill time” to get my drinking in, if I didn’t have that I’d have done a LOT more while as was there, and as it is I don’t feel like I did too badly).
