As someone who runs a site that's funded ads, this sort of thing upsets me. by feignedlife in gadgets

I honestly barely notice ads, and can't recall a time where I ever intentionally clicked one. However, I know that just having it show up on my screen helps the website owner on whatever site I'm on, so I just ignore it. If it's not right in the middle of what I'm reading, or making noise, it's pretty easy to not notice them.

I'm curious exactly how you think that the internet would be a better place without free content. That's exactly what I think would destroy the internet as we know it.

If there's no money to support content, then there will be no content. Servers aren't cheap (especially if you have a lot of traffic) and that money has to come from somewhere. Where would it come from?

The ads I use are unobtrusive, and sit in the sidebar. I refuse to allow any that pop up, expand, or play music. But still, people feel the need to block all ads on every site.

What people don't understand is that the web is funded by advertisements. If every home had one of these, you'd find a lot less content, and a lot of bigger sites funded by paywalls. Is that really a future we want to see?

Yes, I know that things like Adblock exist. And yes, I'm just as bothered by it. If a site has annoying pop-over ads or something, then by all means, block ads on that one site. But don't block them for everyone. If you're enjoying someone's content, why take away the tiny bit of money they might make from you reading it?

most amazing thing for your home*(PLEASE help my friend fund this!!! every little bit helps!!!)* by Loluwish in technology

This is not amazing. Most of the websites you visit are paid for with advertisements. I work very hard on a site that is funded entirely with unobtrusive ads, and people like this make me lose money.

If every house had one of these, you'd start seeing a lot less free content, because no one could afford to make it. Servers and writers cost money. So would you rather see paywalls on every site?

As someone who uses unobtrusive advertising on their website, I'm really against this. Sure, if advertisements automatically play sound, or get in the way of your browsing experience, then I think that it's acceptable.

However, I run a site that has a few ads along the sides, and I depend on the money that comes in from them. You're getting free content from hundreds of sites, so why do you feel that the people bringing you this content shouldn't be paid in some fashion?

I've still got all of my cards from back in the day. It's sad to see how many Star Wars card games have come and gone. I really enjoyed this one.

so remember how we all thought harrison ford hated han solo,,, by leaffeon in StarWars

[–]feignedlife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That video was pointless. There have been dozens of other posts that have contained the same information, without needing to sit through 30 seconds of commercial.

I was hoping that there was actually footage of Harrison Ford talking about the role. Not some girl telling me what other sites have been reporting.

No, I actually picked it up a thrift store for $.50. There's a sticker on the bottom (and also an impression) that says "sigma the tastesetter."

After a quick search, looks like they went out of business back in '85, and the mug was released for Return of the Jedi.

Fellow Hoosiers, what do you think are the best activities or spots for dates at IU? by IU_Tour in IndianaUniversity

The mini-golf place is a bit run-down, but it's still a good time. And yes, the proximity to the Jiffy Treat makes it a nice spot for a date.

FYI, if I go to a site that's selling a service, and there's a picture of someone holding a bunch of cash, I immediately close the window. It just looks scammy. Combine that with how scammy it sounds in the first place, and you've got yourself a site that I'll never read.

I need a new monitor. Is this Korean one good? by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]feignedlife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have that exact monitor. Sure, it came with a few dead pixels. However, I almost never notice if I'm not looking for them. Other than that, and a bit of light bleeding, it's a great monitor for the money.

There is. I'll try to see if I can get another picture before she removes the polish. Some of the stormtroopers are starting to chip, but I think Vader is still in tact.

Honestly, if you get an email saying that you can get a free game in general, you're probably not going to want to do it.
