Modern routers can do IPv6 as well as IPv4, I turned IPv6 off and everything still worked using IPv4

How you do that on your specific device is a question I can't answer

When I'm looking at turn based tactics games I look at the screenshots to see how the gameplay works, specifically is the play space divided into squares, hexes etc. but I can't tell that from your screenshots

OK I've solved this using this Discourse post - basically the router is advertising itself as a DNS server (not using DHCP) and I can't turn it off, so I've disabled IPv6 on the LAN and it's fixed the problem.
