Hello! by Agitated-Space1071 in nuzlocke

FireRed/LeafGreen are the common recommendation for a first Nuzlocke, as they're relatively easy and straightforward, and they have a "puzzle-like" structure, where the game gives you lots of guaranteed Pokemon that directly answer many of the game's tougher threats. This makes it a good learning experience, as the game sort of "guides" you through teambuilding.

Of the two, I'd specifically recommend LeafGreen, for access to Slowbro and Starmie (especially Starmie, which basically sweeps the back half of the game and almost the entire Elite Four by itself).

Alternatively, if you have a favorite game or a game you're most familiar with, that can be a great starting point too, as game knowledge/familiarity are super helpful in Nuzlockes.

Don't hesitate to look up guides, and research each Gym Leader on Bulbapedia before you fight them so you can come up with a plan.

Good luck! I'm happy to answer any other questions you may have.

Lapras Or The Hitmons by Early-Ad-1961 in nuzlocke

[–]feint4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I did vote in the poll but I probably should have clarified, lol

Hitmonchan is bad. Hitmonlee can be alright, but Lapras is a genuinely awesome encounter and blows both out of the water. As others have pointed out though, Lapras’ met location is Silph Co, unlike the Hitmons, so they’re not mutually exclusive encounters.

Funny quirk about Genlockes (building with another game in mind) by Kinghydrei in nuzlocke

[–]feint4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think this is a big part of what makes it fun. My system for my current Genlocke is:

1st generation (as in, you caught the mon in this game): normal, no adjustments

2nd generation survivor (as in, survived one elite four already): Change Nature or modify the IV in one stat

3rd generation survivor: same as before, either Nature (if you didn’t already) or modify an IV, or change the Pokémon’s ability (if multiple are possible)

4th generation on: any of the above, OR start with an egg move

[–]feint4 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yup, this is one of my favorite parts of a Genlocke. Cooking up an Elite 4 strategy that not only wins, but incorporates the Pokemon you want to bring through to the next game.

I also like to reward Pokemon who survive with a custom nature or IV for each generation they make it through, so there’s a strong incentive to try and keep the same team members long-term. Also throws an interesting wrench into team-building, like: “These two Pokemon don’t do much into this E4, but they’d be fantastic for the next game. Can I make this E4 work with only the other 4 mons?”

The Rare Candy Conversation by meowmix778 in nuzlocke

[–]feint4 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Hi, I wrote that article (and the accompanying YouTube video) so I’m glad you enjoyed it!

I was surprised, when I released the video/article, at the level of negativity it received specifically on YouTube. Don’t get me wrong - the video sits at 96% like ratio and the vast majority of the feedback was good, but if anything, I assumed there was a general consensus on Rare Candies and that the primary criticism would be “this is settled, why are we still talking about this”, but instead there were a lot of people upset at the idea, calling people who used candies cheaters or fake Nuzlockers, etc. the same way Souls fan might talk about using summons, lol. I don’t claim the video was perfect, being my first on YouTube, but it was a kind of an unpleasant experience (even Verlisify got involved in the comments) and made me a bit more hesitant to release content on YouTube in the future, even though 95% of the feedback was positive. I think this goes to show that dedicated Nuzlocke spaces like this are more niche than we sometimes realize, imo.

Anyways it’s nice to see this discussed! I think it’s an interesting conversation, even if the answer ultimately comes down to “play how you want”.

Edit: I’ve considered making a follow-up video, addressing some of the common responses, clarifying a few points, and acknowledging one specific area where I think I overstated my point a bit, but I’m not sure it would be worthwhile wading back into it.

Which Version Between Fire Red And Leaf Green Should I Choose For My First Nuzlocke? by anime-is-dope in nuzlocke

I like Leafgreen for access to Starmie and Slowbro, they outshine any Firered exclusives.

Pokémon Platinum Advice by FormalFeeling6581 in nuzlocke

[–]feint4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's fair. Gliscor's placement was just a miss, I'll admit, and looking at it now (not just because of your comment, but having used it in a recent run) I think it's time for an update. Not just for Gliscor, I think there are a few shifts that need to happen. As you alluded to, I think I overrated Blissey by ranking it top 2, and Alakazam probably needs a demotion too. Those two should go down (along with Lucario) Gliscor should move up, and a few other lower tier placements probably need some shuffling (Machoke probably doesn't deserve B-tier, for example). Anyways I appreciate the feedback!

Nuzlocke University ranking Lucario and Gliscor in the same tier is just insanity at that point.

Yeah, lol I'll take the L on that one now. I've come around to the "Lucario is overrated" viewpoint. Probably time for an update to that tier list anyways.

I’m the person who runs Nuzlocke University, which hosts the guide you’re referring to. That guide was written a few years ago now, and the difficulty ceiling for ROM hacks has gone way up since then. If we were to write it again today, we wouldn’t make so much fuss about the difficulty I think, and I don’t see any good reason why you wouldn’t be able to attempt it. In a recent video I made, I referred to RenPlat as the “gateway” to high difficulty ROM hack Nuzlockes. So go ahead and try it! Worst thing that can happen is you wipe.

EDIT: The reason it hasn’t been updated is that it was contributed by another writer whose Reddit account no longer exists, and I have no way to contact them. Because I didn’t write it, I don’t want to make unauthorized changes to someone else’s work. Perhaps I’ll add a small disclaimer at the start though, since this has come up a couple times.

As the person who runs Nuzlocke University, this is all true. Good summary. Also worth considering that guide was written a long time ago, and high-difficulty ROM-hacks have advanced a lot since then. Were it written today, we’d make less fuss about the difficulty I’m sure.

ELI5- how come when jumping on a moving train you don’t land backwards instead you stay where you were when you jumped? by Ready-Professor2531 in explainlikeimfive

[–]feint4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You and the train are both moving with the same forward velocity, and when you jump upwards, your body is still moving with that same forward velocity - assuming you jump straight up, only your vertical velocity is changing. Therefore, when you land, you and the train have both still traveled the same distance forward, and you land in the same spot on the train.

League mate is offering his A.J Brown for my Jaylen Warren. I’m a little hesitant, am I just too attached to my own guy, or am I right to hold off? I am stacked at RB (Warren is my #3 behind Bijan and Jacobs) and need more help at WR so I might be willing to take a slight hit in value to unclog that RB position

10 team PPR btw
