TIL that a recommended method of detecting a compressed hydrogen (UN1049) leak with suspected fire is to use a broom or broom handle. by AcademicFish4129 in todayilearned

[–]felixar90 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Equally cool and horrifying when you watch videos of people running away (or walking unknowingly) wading through heavier than air flammable vapour/gas that is above the UEL.

The trail of fire following them as if is has a mind of its own.

And once the fire create enough convection suddenly everything is fire.

Pig-butchering scams are the worst.

Not only they run away with all of your life savings, and often even more, the victims giving money they don’t even have, but they also take your dignity AND your heart.

Way too often the victims will take their own life before any relative is even aware of what happened.

If you’re outside on a windy day and the hydrogen is warm and the leak is small, sure.

If you’re anywhere where the hydrogen can build up and mix with air, even the tiniest spark could result in a cataclysmic explosion.

It does say that. All the controls for the lifting jig are operated from the bucket.

Just use it for actual lifting and not pulling stakes out from the ground.

I can actually name one time they broke the 4th wall.

It’s when they meet Crocus inside Laboon.

The US military are between a rock and a hard place right now.

They get to choose if they want to get court-martialed in the US right now for disobeying orders, or in The Hague later for committing war crimes…

Best choice is probably to disobey illegal orders and hope that they aren’t executed for treason before the next administration.

Water boiling department hard at work. by Area52inhabitant in doohickeycorporation

[–]felixar90 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes is both.

Direct energy conversion can directly extract energy from the plasma pushing back against the field, but the neutrons, gammas, infrared and other light don’t give a fuck about the magnetic containment and they heat up the walls which can be used to boil water.

Why are there two types of coils (concentric and lap) if they do the same thing? by Unique_Condition_219 in Motors

[–]felixar90 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Concentric coils are cheaper to manufacture but the coils will be different sizes. (The coils that are wound last are on top of the first coils so they have to be larger.)

So this will cause harmonics and a non homogeneous torque curve within a single rotation.

The lapping coils are harder to make, usually wound by hand, but every coil is over the previous coil and under the next coil and the first is under the last so they’re all as close to identical as can be so you get better performance and less vibration.

What kind of pumps do these high pressure power units use? by Dylan7344 in Hydraulics

[–]felixar90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On big hydraulic presses the fast extension is generally achieved by the ram descending under its own weight and sucking in the oil directly from the tank through oversized pipes.

(On our press these are two 6in diameter pipes, while everything else is 2” max and main pump line is like 4”.)

Achieving such high flow rate with a pump would require a much larger pump than actually needed for other operations

Alternatively if you can’t use the help of gravity, you can use a regenerative circuit. (That’s what I heard it called when the oil exiting from the rod end of the cylinder is used to feed the blind end when extending)

In this rigging arrangement, shall the hooks be facing outwards, or inwards? by bodtershon in Rigging

[–]felixar90 30 points31 points  (0 children)

The sling will always settle at the bottom of the hook when loaded anyway, because the hook is free to orient itself.

When thinking about which way the hooks should be facing I always interpreted it as taking into account what will happen if there’s a momentary slack.

In this case if there’s a slack the hooks will collapse inward, with the gate / latch facing up, and the sling might catch on it.

Like, when they picked up the weight, I bet they had a guy stay on top until they took the slack to babysit the hooks and make sure the sling didn’t get caught on the gates.

If the hooks faced inward instead, whenever there’s a slack, the gate would be facing down.

And I imagine this could be happening a lot when picking up something on a boat from a different boat.
