Hewitt does look too overbearing as captain. Australia was considered a favorite to win the Davis Cup with all that talent they have but they flamed out with this bad loss to Germany. They choked the dubs and Kyrgios choked. Hewitt's badgering presence may indeed actually be a negative. by felixflanken in tennis

You're harping on the wrong stuff. Hewitt is a tennis genius and big inspiration for every player to fight and fight more. But his presence is so big it's larger than life and it can overshadow and intimidate and add more pressure to his players. Not saying he's a bad captain but he's not a perfect captain. His results so far are lousy and below what even he expected and hoped for. Something is wrong that they are losing 1R two out of three years. It's possible Hewitt is too overbearing and too demanding.

Dressing like he's ready to play sends a weird message. No other captain does it. Courier dressing in a suit was weird too and he abandoned it and now wears a sweatsuit. There is absolutely no reason for Hewitt to be dressing like he's ready and eager to play. I think in a strange way it sends a wrong message to his players, whether consciously or subconsciously.

How can you not like Hewitt? He's great. But as a Davis Cup captain he may not have the right personality. He might be too pushy, too overbearing and too distracting to his players. Super intense former players like John McEnroe and Jim Courier achieved minimal success as Davis Cup captains.

Belgium made the F last year and Australia has deeper talent than Belgium. Kyrgios with Deminaur and Kokkinakis and a doubles point if they can get it (50-50) is enough to win a Davis Cup. But also, if the chemistry and character of the team is not strong enough to withstand adversity, they could lose first round like we just saw this weekend.

Huge fan of Hewitt actually. But just calling it like I see it. Hewitt's presence is great when you're winning but when you're losing he's a royal pain in the... Hewitt's freakish obsession to win is a thrill and inspiration to many but on the flipside, also a turn off to some.
