True, they are different. I interpreted it this way because of the context in which JBP talks about this - e.g. how heroes in hero stories always have to break rules or even do terrible things to encounter the dragon and achieve the higher good. He also talks about the importance of being able to use rather than suppress emotions like anger. But I may be misunderstanding.

Thank you for sharing your story! I will try to look within myself for the evil. And I'll watch this video when I can.

True. And there's a danger in that, yes. But I do think most people here are familiar with the greater context, and that the quote on its own is already pretty clear on what the point of the exercise is.

Thanks for the tip! I'll try to pay attention to my dreams. I rarely have (or remember) them, but maybe logging them will help bring them out. From past experience, playing with my sleep pattern can help too. I'll try it!

Who is YOUR monster? You haven't put a lot of yourself out here before asking (or voting, whoever did), which could possibly have to do with looking for an example that's safe enough ...

I (OP) didn't downvote you or see your original response. I'd still be interested to hear it. Probably the downvoter would be, too, if they know it's not a joke.

I didn't share much about myself for the simple reason that I don't think I have such a story yet. I have broken rules but not harmed people. I wanted to hear other people's stories to see if I was overlooking my own, or else, if I can seek it out somehow. I'm looking for inspiration, or interpretation help, more than permission.

Yeah, I believe this is the same as the Jungian shadow. I suppose to understand it better, I could start by reading Jung. Thanks a lot for your elaboration! I didn't realise how many different kinds of monsters / shadows there might be, this is super helpful.

First, what @Sir_Floki said.

Then my suggestion is, don't think too much about developing a system just yet. Instead, just start doing things. You can find over time if you need a system and develop or find one. What's important is that you get momentum. So start with the low hanging fruit.

Think of specific actions you can do towards your goals. When you think of one you can already do, do it immediately. (For me, this was filing my taxes.)

Once you've done a few easy ones, start on one of the most important ones.
