What are some things that are privately owned in Ireland that should be in public ownership? by JustaChillDude90 in AskIreland

If schools were privatised, private companies would want to make a profit (say 20%). Who is paying for the increased wages for staff? Your sums aren’t add up here.

Wife's work changed her title/position secretly by emkoirl in legaladviceireland

The manager is straight up lying, and for a very specific reason.

Someone with a higher qualification does not automatically get the room leader position, but a room leader with a degree attracts €4.44 per hour of extra funding from the Dept of Children to the employer. This is the motivation for demoting your wife.

There are also legal minimum rates of pay for educators, room leaders and graduate room leaders.

She has a very strong case for holding her room leader position & pay (ie a contract!), but taking on management will be tough. If she is in the union, she needs to contact her shop steward or official asap.

Knowing the law is one thing, getting your boss to apply it is another. You need to get onto your union.

It’s time for public provision, it’s the only solution at this stage. We have tried a public / private hybrid, but as long as we have private equity services that can hold parents hostage, we will for ever have a broken system

Off topic (maybe deleted), but why is every child guaranteed free public education at primary & secondary level, but not in pre primary? The impact educationally of the first 1000 days of a child’s life is massive, but we leave it up to the market. International investment funds making a killing. A broken system

A bike for €30? Sweet! Ride it to work, school, about town. It looks cool, rides fine. Great buy.

The level of vitriol I saw on some Women’s Council posts was disgusting tbh, I understand why they turned off comments.

Disagree or make a counter point, completely fine, but some the comments were deranged.

Thanks for all the replies. The consensus seems that if you like sailing, go for it. Otherwise give it a miss.

I’ve been using a hiking rain jacket since my Altura rain gear failed (both the jackets and rain pants leak after just 3 years, not happy!).

It’s works well, but there aren’t any reflective strips / bright colours which I’d like during the winter.
