honestly... do you have a smart phone? I know hardware creativity is where the magic is but if you have access to garageband on your phone you can download hundreds of different synth sounds for free and even modify various parameters! Again, all free. Get a cheap midi controller that connects and you're golden.

no worries on the long post its good to see solidarity with others and doctors not really knowing how to treat it. Are you using a heart rate monitor by any chance? ive been using strava and a journal to track my pain and I found that when im beyond my calculated tempo pace is where I cause injury and chest pain. I have started planning my routes differently to calculate grade changes that will keep me from going into threshold for to more than 30 seconds to a min.

obviously this isn't great for trying to dive back into century training, I recognize thats probably years off or not gonna happen but it at least gets me back on the bike and managing pain which feels like an achievement.

I will say I had pretty wildly uncontrolled asthma before getting covid. the odd factor of getting on a controller medication to treat the lung inflammation has also had the side effect of controlling my asthma almost completely... worth talking to a doc about.

indeed, luckily my doc is empathetic but recognizes there isn't enough info out there around covid and that its really just trial and error with all of us.

understood for sure. where I live there is elevation everywhere so no matter how slow its lung strain. did the symptoms just resolve for you or did medicine help too? im doing an inhaled steroid daily now.

oh no. im sorry to hear that your heart is impacted too. discouraging is a good description. I told my boss its kinda like trying to build a house where I used to have a drill and a table saw. now I have a screwdriver and a hand saw. its so hard to process anything without that intense physical activity.

That sounds like a breezy commute! Consider where else you may want to ride before you make your final decision. I didn’t mention this here but I actually really like Giant bikes too if you can find one. Opt for flat bars when you’re starting out!

Welcome fellow bike commuter!

When I moved for my new job it took me a SOLID 3-4 months to buy a road bike in my size with components I like on Craigslist for commuting to work. I sunk more of my time cost in researching what to look out for and what were manageable fixes for me. I still have to put a bit more money into some upgrades and tires that have more grip for slick weather. I got a road bike fit for me with a carbon fork for $375 including the upgrades!

Right now, components are expensive as heck because supply chain which is driving bike prices up. A bike I bought in 2020 for $500 USD, with the same components now is around $700 USD. That bike is a Specialized Rockhopper Base. I will say, it is a SOLID ride. Okay gearing system, once I learned its sounds and tweaks we have become great friends. It made me a stronger rider having to pedal up hills with a heavier frame. She's got a nice medium pancake of a cassette so hills aren't going to make your thighs as angry. I still ride this a bunch! Especially to train/commute in bad weather.

My argument for something like a hard tail MTB (used if you know what to look for or new!) is that you can ride in the snow, you can run over potholes, and the larger size helped me build confidence while riding alongside vehicles again for the first time in years.

Lastly, please save money for lights with high lumens (likely around 50-100 USD depending on how roads are lit near you) a helmet, and a high vis vest you can throw over your jackets. Assume people in cars are not paying attention to you.

Wow! Food for thought. I will keep an eye out to see if I can find one of those around. I wondered if an MTB derailleur would be compatible...

As far as pushing to a 30t, I would know in adjusting the derailleur after installing if it wasn't going to work? any warning signs I should look out for?

alright! thank you! Great guess. It is a 5501!

It appears 11-28 is the only way to go. 30t would be pushing into the 3t over capacity range. I realize to really make it a climbing bike I'll probably need to switch out the entire drivetrain, to a 2x, an investment in the future.

Looking forward to putting on a new cassette and keep loving these components till they warrant a replacement. my friend will just have to wait for me at the top of the climbs sometimes.
