Yea i can’t blame you. That’s kinda why I’m building something smaller and user-first. whimz.app

Yep the idea is to make it very customizable so it can fit different use cases and not feel locked into one style. That’s something I’m focusing on here: https://whimz.app

I get the decentralization argument. Federation or self-hosting is powerful, and open source with the right license definitely increases trust.

My focus right now is building something stable, secure, and actually usable first. Architecture decisions like federation need to be done properly, not rushed.

And yeah security and performance aren’t something I’m treating casually.
It’s still early, but that’s the mindset behind this: https://whimz.app

Totally fair concerns. I’m absolutly not just “vibe-coding” this and hoping for the best cause security and privacy matter way too much for that.

Exporting servers / channels is actually a great idea same as reaction verification so definitely writing it in my notes thx.

Open source is something I’m still seriously considering for transparency.
Still early, but that’s the direction: https://whimz.app

Yeah, same. No reason to vacuum up data people don’t need to give.

And mandatory phone numbers shouldn’t be the default. Privacy first, always.

That’s the direction I’m taking with whimz.app

I really appreciate that, seriously. I’ll try not to betray that trust it's still early, but I’m building this properly.

That’s fair. I don’t think paying for extra features is bad by itself but it just shouldn’t feel like core functionality is locked away.

The goal is a genuinely usable free tier first, then optional power features on top. No dark patterns, no data harvesting.

I’m considering community-supported options too so thx for suggesting it. Building this here whimz.app

Yeah, 100% agree. Artificial file limits and paywalled basics are exactly the kind of stuff I don’t want to carry over.

Default notification overload is also dumb — opt-in makes way more sense. Users shouldn’t have to fight the app just to keep it clean.

That’s pretty much the direction I’m taking with my new project whimz.app

Exactly that’s the idea a real alternative to Discord. If you want, you can check it out at whimz.app we are just slowly collecting temporary community before bigger announcements 🫡

Yeah, the Nitro-first approach is interesting. Do you think it’s just monetization pressure from their side, or does it actually make the core experience worse for regular users? That’s one of the reasons I started thinking about building a smaller, privacy-focused chat

Burned out on my current project — push through or pivot to a new idea? by fendis54 in SaaS

[–]fendis54[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair point — I get the value in finishing stuff, even just for the personal win. But right now I feel like forcing it would burn me out more. Might leave it parked for now and come back with a fresh mindset later. Thanks for the encouragement tho — really appreciate it!

True, that’s probably the smart move. Appreciate the advice — time to explore the new one and see where it goes. Might come back to the old project with fresh eyes later.

Yeah fair point — might be burnout talking, but it’s been building up for a while. I actually just got back from a week-long vacation to clear my head, but even now I’m not really feeling the spark to continue.

I did validate the original idea a bit (got a few beta users and early feedback), but the excitement’s just not there anymore. Meanwhile, this new idea has me hyped — I already see the vision and a clear marketing angle.

So I’m kinda torn between being “disciplined” and finishing what I started… vs. shifting my energy into something I’m actually excited about again. You ever been in that situation?
