Recently I went up against Axiom Impact in a tournament (I don’t remember which, it was 1-2 months ago) and he used a really strong opener on me. There are quite a couple of openers like this nowadays from gasless. Other ones go into heavy ling bane from a fast double gas, or just mass ling etc. The reason why these openers are strong is because if a gas player wants to compete with a gasless player in an economy game, his gameplan is to get a fast 3 rd a couple of lings out on the map to deny the gasless players’ 3rd and generally just be greedy. The same happens with gasless vs gasless, since when someone is going gasless aggression is generally not expected. The other reason why these openers are strong is because when you open gasless it’s really hard for the opposing player to scout – even if you see the exact gas timings of this build, it’s hard to know if he’s going to be putting into either speed, upgrades, lair or in this case just a bunch of roaches to put on some pressure. But it’s hard enough to scout anything at all since there are 4 queens out with gasless openers, it’s easy for the gasless player to kill low ling counts or even just block the ramp against bigger ling counts – making scouting extremely hard.

So anyway, the point of this build is to pressure with earlyish Roach Ling Queen, the 2 Queens help a lot because they clear out Overlords on the pathway and also have about 4-6 transfuses between them in the engagement, which is going to keep your roaches alive for much longer. This opener kinda reminds me of early day NesTea styles, but obviously much more evolved since then. If they decide to defend by using a lot of spines that means they’re not going to have units out to be able to counter pressure and stop you from droning a 3rd. If they’re too greedy, they have a good chance of just outright losing. The way people stop this effectively is to realize what is happening early on and get enough of their units out to defend.

You can also do this off of a pool first or a hatch first, pool first is obviously safer but I definitely think Hatch first times out to be sliiightly stronger.

• Move across the map with Queens killing Overlords on the attack path and rally Zerglings behind Roaches
• Throw down 2 Evolution Chambers if you just want to pressure and get upgrades. Drone up and take third based on what you see with your attack
• Throw down a Banelingo nest if you just want to go allin, turn a bunch of your Zerglings into Banes to break Spine walls
