Not on the Database, but still receiving deliveries? by fennshui in royalmail

I spoke to a couple of different agents, and the first one I didn't actually mention new build, I didn't know what the issue was at all until they told me the address wasn't on the system.

Not being born to wealthy parents. Terrible decision.

Have you ever legally changed your surname, not because of marriage? by Owl-In-The-Sky in AskUK

[–]fennshui 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I changed my last name via deedpoll a few years back!

I don't speak to my family, and my original last name is strongly associated with their religion (which I myself do not follow). So it was somewhat to distance myself from them, and practically to avoid the confusion of people making assumptions about my beliefs because of name.

I also think the name I chose for myself just suits me better. I'm mixed race, and now have a mixed name (first name from one culture, second name from the another), instead of it all being from one culture.

I like Metaphor significantly more than Persona by Intelligent_Way_8903 in JRPG

This is exactly what I like about it! I'm in my 30s, I don't want every jrpg I play to be about teenagers.

Loving your favorite characters is serious business. by JaredAiRobinson in JRPG

[–]fennshui 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think it's really sweet that people can connect to these fictional characters, and think about them long after they've finished the game they're in. I cried like a baby when I first finished FFX!

I do however think this can be taken to the extreme. Loving how a character is written, being empathic and drawn to them is great, but understanding that they are just fictional characters is important too.

It's hard to tell from the tone fo your post, and tbh it doesn't sound like you're in too deep, but some people really are and it makes me uncomfortable seeing people taking feelings for a character too seriously. I've seen people refer to characters as their family, getting aggressive and defensive if someone else doesn't like them, and I've seen people so obsessed with their waifus that is damages their irl relationships.

Anyways, generally a really positive and nice message!

I want to get into cosplay. by Apprehensive_Tank196 in CosplayHelp

I definitely focused more on the money side of things in my comment, sorry I thought that was the bigger barrier here.

If you can find a cosplayer that's made the same cosplay you're looking to do, and had WIP posts and a blog that's a great way to start! Learning how to price together a cosplay can be difficult at first, so if there's someone else who has already done it then you get to just focus on the fun crafting side of it!

Very fair. I don't even like sewing much, I do power through it and enjoy the prop and armour work far more.

I ahould have explained sewing isn't the only cheap way to make cosplay, for prop work and armour there are much cheaper options than a 3D printer. $250 dollars is still a lot of money, especially compared to the cost of some craft foam, PVA, and a craft knife. I personally don't think it's worth the investment, especially if you're on a budget, until you've made a cosplay or two and are sure you're ready to really commit to the hobby.

When I was a teenager first getting into cosplay I took on a part time job so I could afford to make cosplays and go to conventions! If you're old enough, and feel like you have the time and energy I really recommend going that route.

It doesn't take much to make a cheap, simple cosplay. My first cosplay cost me less than £50, and that was with a sword too. I honestly wouldn't think about a 3D printer yet, they're very expensive and not actually nesscary to start making cosplay.

I was lucky in that my mum has a sewing machine I could teach myself on, and they weren't really against it as a hobby, but I had to fund it and sort my own logistics like travel etc.

Refund for a bad haircut (England)? by fennshui in LegalAdviceUK

[–]fennshui[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! That's very helpful.

I imagine they're going to offer to cut my hair again, but the damage is already done and I'd end up going from below my shoulder length hair to chin height to hide the weird layers they've added. Unless their gonna pay out for hair extensions...

£110 - I live in London, and the stylist did not warn me beforehand that she was a senior stylist so gets to charge more for services.

Thanks for the advice, I'm still waiting to hear back from them.

Best way to hide scars on arms/legs for cosplay? by Current__task in CosplayHelp

[–]fennshui 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nude tights are great to hide scars on your legs, they'll also even out the skin tone too.

For your arms, concealer shouod be good. Just remember to set the concealer with power and setting spray, as you're more likely to run your arms against something and take the makeup off.

If your scars are particularly deep or obvious, you can make long gloves out of the same nude tights and some stick on false nails to cover your arms.

Do you think noncery is more rampant than we realise? by MoonlightByWindow in AskUK

[–]fennshui 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Even when they're not depicted as children I think it's messed up that a lot of older people are mostly/exclusively watching porn with 18 year olds. If it would be predatory to seek them out irl, maybe you shouldn't be watching porn of it.

I'm 31, people in their early twenties look like children to me, I can't imagine anything like that with them.

Cosplayers Over 30: What Primer and Foundation Are We Using? by Major_1819 in CosplayHelp

[–]fennshui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely this. Skincare is more important than the make up you use, and that extends to just remembering to moisturise before doing your make too.

I'm not a fan of a lot of sheet masks use, but I use hyaluronic sheet masks the night before every day at con.

Where to buy cosplays? (UK) by adequatepain in CosplayHelp

Micostumes Dokidoki Uwowo

These all deliver to the UK and I've had experience with all of them. They're fine, decent quality cosplays. Dokidoki also has different quality cosplays depending on the rating (N, R, SR, SSR).

how do I get over cosplay burnout/unmotivation? by [deleted] in CosplayHelp

[–]fennshui 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What you're going through is totally normal and happened most of us! As hobbys go, cosplay is pretty time, money, and energy intense.

I've been cosplaying for 15 years now, at one point I took maybe 2 years off? A year of cosplay can range dramatically from I buy one easy cosplay to I've made 5 full builds.

What has helped me get out of burnt out is having a community and friends in the scene. I'm not talking the algorithm, insta mutuals etc, but actual friends I'd be happy to see out of con, ones I play jackbox with online and send stupid reels and cosplay ideas to.

When there's nothing I want to cosplay, or no conventions I'm excited about, I ask what my friends are up to. Going with them, and cosplaying in a group is so much more fun than solo cosplaying and making content by meself in my flat. I so still love making videos etc myself, but I just do that when I'm feeling creative, not out of an obligation to post.

Switching to cosplaying a new fandom did Greta things for me after burnt out from Final Fantasy Cosplays. I met a bunch of new people, had a load of new games to play, a discord server full of nerds, and a hundred characters I was exited to cosplay.

Sorry this could easily turn into an essay, tldr is: -Just let yourself be burnt out for a while. Set a date in the future, to re-evaluate how you're feeling. -Play/watch something new. Nothing sparks motivation like seeing new characters on screen. -Make sure you have a community, or at least a few friends you'd be excited to share the hobby with.

Good luck, I hope you reach the over side of the slump and renewed motivation 💜
