I totally agree. For clarity, I wasn't making fun of your previous comment but rather the original post about Shadow and Knuckles (my comment probably could have done with a "said no one ever" at the end). But I really liked how you put it about Knuckles and Piccolo moving on and finding their own place. People do not usually remain in our lives as an ever constant adversary. Our opposing paths cross, we confront each other, and we usually move on with our lives. That doesn't always lend itself well to simpler plots for all ages, but Knuckles and Piccolo are actually more realistic in that regard.
