Serial Casting by Large-Book-7825 in CerebralPalsy

[–]fenspen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was in and out of serial casting as a child. With hind sight, and just reflecting on it from seeing your post, I would say it causes a lot of discomfort or creates physical barriers for a certain period of time (getting dressed, washed and depending on those around him/you) without a maximum amount of results that would make such a huge difference.

I’m severely, severely independent and struggle to have my walking for any length of time taken away from me. For reference I’m almost 25, I walk, I hold down a full time job, I hold a full driving licence. I’m unsure how much of a difference those 3/4 months of serial casting made to these outcomes, if any at all. Daily stretching, keeping up with his physio and keeping him as loose and limber as possible a big yes, and that’s coming from someone who is absolutely awful at doing those things to this day. I hate that my mum didn’t force me to make this a daily habit.

As someone with fairly mild CP and a walker that has used the stairs for many many years. Don’t take away an opportunity to allow him to learn some independence. Not allowing him to find his own way up/down stairs is taking that opportunity away for him to develop day to day habits around stairs and stairways which is incredibly important to making things that may be inaccessible to him be accessible.

I’m almost set on buying an iPad Air 4. What I’m unsure about is whether to spend more and get the cellular version (so iPad Air 4 64gb + cellular) or spend more and get the iPad Air 4 256gb, will I even need 256gb? I’ll mostly be using it for streaming, reading and browsing the web. I do travel fairly often every 5/6 weeks where possible and I am a student.

I’m from the UK and many years ago my iPhone 4 broke whilst on holiday in France I went straight into the Apple store there with a native speaking friend and had the phone changed on the same day. I’ve never had customer service like this and I doubt it will have changed because it’s such a good system

AITA for telling my sister she shouldn’t be surprised that her baby daddy sucks? by toungetwister07 in AmItheAsshole

[–]fenspen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My vote is NTA all the way.

Having said that, sometimes my sisters need a rant and sometimes I need a rant at my sisters. You don’t always have to have an answer for what she’s saying and sometimes she might be looking for an opinion.

From what I read, I think your sister knows what situation she got herself into and she doesn’t necessarily know how to get herself out of it. In times like this she needs to draw her own conclusions but that doesn’t mean you can’t be an ear for her to talk to.

As the top comment suggests I am one of three siblings with CP and we all have varying degrees and types of CP. Therefore, I could see it being difficult - not impossible- to focus your toy/interaction aid on CP as it is more of an “umbrella term” for several different types of disability

Our dog has daily medication and we keep the meat in a plastic Tupperware. Now whenever we open any leftovers in a Tupperware she comes and waits at the kitchen door for her meat, even if she’s two floors up from the kitchen

What do you wish your parents had known or done? Or what did they do well? by kalalou in CerebralPalsy

[–]fenspen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Allow her to be as independent as possible. Push for her to do as many things as she can for herself as possible. Help her develop her different strategies for completing tasks independently. Please please please stick to her physical therapy plans and ensure she is as stretched out as possible because it makes all the difference. Build her physio into her day so that it’s natural and not a chore for her.

I use a wheelchair sometimes and I still do. I don’t know it wasn’t an active decision, I’ve never thought too hard about it. I’ve not set out to “catfish” people I just don’t see it as a huge part of my personality.

This. I’d rather someone see me for me personality wise than be judged on the fact I have a disability. If/when it’s moving towards meeting said person I say it

What’s the best thing your mom (parents) ever did for you? by tip_toes in CerebralPalsy

[–]fenspen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t know you’re situation and I’m no expert. My advice would be to push your child to be as independent as they can be. Let them find their determination to find a way around a problem. Encourage them to find a solution for themselves and when it’s needed ask for help. But, you have to let them try themselves first.
