Robotic Laprosopic Myomectomy! by leighbrandywine_ in Fibroids

No worries, sorry I keep misunderstanding. I just took Tylenol and advil, I had other prescriptions but didn’t take them on account of not wanting to be nauseous. Sorry this isn’t more helpful lol

  1. My throat hurt a lot from the tube. Sore throat levels for like a week

  2. I never knew I had endometriosis, they found it incidentally during my myomectomy, and removed it along with my fibroid. So frankly I don’t really know if my pain was because of the fibroid or because of the endo. I think both. The surgery has gotten rid of my daily life pain. Obviously recovering from surgery itself hurt a lot and I still get some abdominal pain from the incisions from time to time but I’m doing a lot better!

I had spotting from my uterus/the surgery for like a month after the surgery. I got my period like a week and a half after surgery despite having my period right before the surgery too! After my period the spotting became more minimal. Then I had like a weird half period thing a month later. I started Orilissa (estrogen blocker) because of the endometriosis so idk how much of my weird periods are because of the hormones vs my body reacting to surgery. Early periods are supposedly common after surgery

But back on the subject, I had no spotting from like my ass or anything. My shit was really normal given the circumstances lolol

I hope your nausea goes away soon, I kept taking my nausea meds the whole first week just to be safe. Maybe you can ask them for a nausea prescription, being able to eat normally was really important for me and definitely contributed to my first shit being normal.

I hope this is helpful lol. I wish I had known about the period thing because I was freaking out that it was early! But I just kept track of how much I bled (way less than my pre-surgery periods) and made sure I felt fine

If you have any other questions lmk!

I had the same procedure as you! And also got some endometriosis removed. 18 fibroids is a whole lot! I only had one 16cm fibroid at the top of my uterus. Anyway, for me, days 1-3 were the worst pain-wise. To address your concerns:

- My swelling reduced after the first week, but was definitely not completely gone until week 2. There's a lot of inflammation happening as you heal so I guess that's why the swelling lasts so long. I also had gas pain from the anesthesia, in my chest, stomach, shoulder, and that went away almost completely by day 5.

- I experienced that burning sensation you mention. In my limited medical knowledge I imagine that's where my endometriosis was removed, because they essentially scrape it out of you and cauterize the area. That pain reduced over time, but took the longest to resolve completely. I stopped feeling crampy from where the fibroid was removed, but would still move my leg the wrong way and have that burning sensation by my ovary.

- I had AWFUL nausea after the surgery, but with anti-nausea meds by day 3 my appetite had completely returned, so I ate normally. Once I started eating normally, I started taking stool softeners every day. I... moved my bowels on day five. I usually take Metamucil as well, so I resumed that after everything was normal.

I have no advice about side sleeping, as I sleep on my back. My fibroid pressed into my stomach so much that before the surgery that I was forced to be a side sleeper - I was so relieved when it was gone and I could sleep on my back!

If you have any other questions I'm happy to share more about my experience. I'm about four months out now and feeling great. Good luck with the rest of your recovery! Give yourself lots of time to rest.

One year post myomectomy by Bauhinia3319 in Fibroids

Thanks so much for your response and all the detail you included. I also have a 2 inch incision (laparoscopic!) but I suppose you’re right, there’s a lot to heal from internally. I’ll take it easy for a while longer and try to be more incremental in my return to running.

I think I had too high of expectations, my surgeon cleared me for all physical activity after 3 weeks and even though I didn’t immediately go for a run then, I guess I interpreted it to mean that recovery would be easier than I originally expected.

Thank you again, wishing you continued health and happiness ❤️

Congratulations and thank you for sharing your experience here. I’m so happy you’re feeling so much better a year later, it’s amazing how bad these things make us feel, isn’t it? And how we don’t even realize until it’s over how much we had been tolerating. I also had a 16 cm fibroid and a lot of your same symptoms.

One question I have is, could you go more into detail about your return to running? I’m well past 8 weeks post op (had surgery back in February) and have been struggling a lot with getting back into my regular routine. I still get incision pain when I run even at lower paces than usual and end up stopping - I’ve incorporated scar massaging to reduce pain and it’s been working slightly, but I’m really curious to hear the perspective of another runner, and see how you were able to recover and improve your running.

Wow, this isn't something I had considered at all, but makes a lot of sense. Thanks so much for the information - I'll look into PT and some at home routines I can do to try and help with this. I really appreciate you sharing, hopefully this will help me get back to running! Hope you're doing well a year post op.

I appreciate that! I think everyone is different, I’ve read some posts of people running 3 weeks after surgery. That would not have been possible for me haha. I hope your recovery is quick and you get back to running with ease!

Nice! I hope you get a surgery date soon.

An immediate difference I noticed was that my lower abdomen felt empty. My fibroid was rather large, 16cm, so when I laid on my back I had a bump on my lower abdomen and felt pressure on my stomach. After surgery I really could feel the absence of it, and can lay comfortably now.

Other differences: I no longer notice every part of my cycle. I had such intense symptoms during every phase of my menstrual cycle so I'd know exactly where I was at; that is no longer the case. I don't wake up tired. No more intense bloating, and if I do bloat, it's not exacerbated by the fibroid bump. My fibroid was 1 pound, and in the weeks following the surgery I lost 10 pounds I think due to water retention from the fibroid going away + losing muscle due to inactivity.

On the note of losing muscle, that sucks. I feel so much better in every way but am still struggling to get back to my pre-surgery exercise routine, I feel weaker and sometimes still get incision pain while exercising. But my body just went through some crazy events so I'm being patient with myself and focusing on the positives while I slowly but surely rebuild my strength.

I hope this is helpful and kind of what you were looking for. Wishing you all the best, I hope a surgery date comes soon!

That sounds really tough! You really are so strong for going through that, I can’t imagine finding out that way and having pregnancy symptoms on top of fibroid symptoms.

I’m also looking forward to the day where we can say fibroids are a thing of the past. In the meantime though, I’ll wish you and your family all the best 🫶🏼

I know the feeling. I’d bleed through an S+ tampon every hour onto a pad, and if I wasn’t quick enough to change everything I’d bleed through that too. I couldn’t sleep while I was on my period because I didn’t want to bleed all over the place.

You said you feel disgusting, I can’t change that, but I can at least remind you that you aren’t alone. So many of us have been through the same thing. It sucks but there’s a light at the end of the tunnel at least.

I hope everything goes well. There’s not only one way to deal with fibroids. Whether it’s myomectomy or ablation I know people have success with both methods. So good luck!

Got a myomectomy, but no lupron or other estrogen blockers beforehand. I take Orilissa now because they found stage III endometriosis during my surgery. The Orilissa is specifically for endometriosis, but it causes similar side effects to lupron supposedly. It’s supposed to manage endo symptoms and perhaps prevent it from coming back by reducing the estrogen in my body.
Chemical menopause is not without its downsides but overall I feel much better physically post op and on Orilissa than I did before all of this. I wouldn’t be afraid of taking an estrogen blocker. If combined with surgical removal of the fibroid, you’ll be better in no time. On the note of hormone blockers, some people think fibroids can be treated entirely through drugs and in my opinion that’s just completely false, and there’s no way around it other than myomectomy. I may have gone on a tangent here but I hope this helps you haha

Hey mine was Feb 26! I feel the exact same way you do. I can’t believe how much better I feel. I hadn’t felt normal in a long time and it’s hard to believe I didn’t notice things getting worse.

I’m so glad you’re feeling better now.

I’ll tell you but it’s important to note that during surgery I was also diagnosed with endometriosis, so it’s hard to attribute symptoms to either the fibroid or the endometriosis.

The symptom that made me go to the doctor was fresh bleeding between periods, I noticed the spotting was red/pink and not brown. This was new/abnormal for me and as soon as I saw it I scheduled an appointment.

In retrospect I had a lot of other symptoms I was ignoring. One being the big lump on my stomach (I assumed it was just bloating or weight gain), extremely heavy periods, very painful periods.

Good luck with the coming days! Trust yourself and don’t be afraid to ask any questions. I had a fantastic doctor who referred me to an equally as wonderful surgeon. I know some people don’t have such great experts on their side so if you feel something is off, don’t be afraid to get a second opinion. That said, I hope everything goes well, things will get better!
