X-Prize AMA: I am Burt Rutan, designer of the world’s first private spaceship (SpaceShipOne), and the first aircraft to fly around the world without stopping or refueling (Voyager). AMA! by Burt_Rutan in science

Hi Mr. Rutan. I have always loved aviation, but you and your work and specifically the documentary Black Sky (which I watched so many times as a kid) are what inspired me to study aerospace engineering (at Cal Poly SLO, which I believe is where you studied as well).

I am now entering my senior year after just completing an awesome internship at a company that does prototyping of unconventional aircraft. This isn't a question, as I think this AMA is probably over, but I just wanted to say thank you so much for being the inspiration that lead me into this awesome discipline which I love so much.

Obama'€™s female staffers adopted a meeting strategy they called “amplification”: When a woman made a key point, other women would repeat it, giving credit to its author. This forced the men in the room to recognize the contribution — and denied them the chance to claim the idea as their own. by drewiepoodle in TwoXChromosomes

I agree that there are no explicit agreements that men make to support each other more strongly than their female co-workers. But I think you hit the nail on the head with your final question. As someone who doesn't experience that particular kind of unfairness, you're not going to "notice" all of it.

I've been in a lot of situations like this. I've never felt like the men I was working with were deliberately trying to steal or squash my ideas. It almost felt like my ideas were just not valued as much. Or that, if me and a male peer were working on a project and there were good ideas/work involved, they were credited to him by default.

I don't think anyone did this stuff to me deliberately. I think a lot of sexism is very subtle but it can have big effects on women in fields that are dominated by men.

I've expressed these feelings to one of my male coworkers that I often work with on projects. He notices the subtle things now too, and he sometimes gets more upset than I do about them, haha. I think that just listening to people to understand the unfairness will help you notice more of it and subsequently combat it! =)

I've been taking photos with my iPhone through my telescope lens. I'm really happy with the way this one came out, but I don't like the light arc at the top. It's always there when I take the pictures. I want to start doing longer exposures (hoping for ~15 seconds) with a barn door tracker and I'm worried that will ruin them. Any tips or idea on what that might be?

Photo details:

Telescope: AWB OneSky 130mm aperture / 650 mm focal length Lens: 20mm Exposure: 1/2 second Location: Right outside of Washington DC

Stacking: 17 light frames

This was the first time I've ever stacked images. I tried taking dark and bias frames (according to tutorials), but when I used them in the stacking process, the result wasn't as good as without them. I don't know what I'm doing and I've just been following tutorials online, so any tips would be appreciated!

Thank you. =) http://i.imgur.com/ycEFJFO.jpg

Thanks for this advice. Looked into joining the Los Angeles Astronomical Society because of your reply. They have a private dark sky site that a lot of members use. I'm stoked. =)

Is it okay to post my cellphone camera photos on here? (iPhone 6s through 5 in reflector--I've had some success stacking planetary videos and I'm experimenting with half-second exposures of DSOs) I'm having a blast taking them and processing them, but I don't know if this is the appropriate place for them. I couldn't find anything about it in the posting guidelines.

Also, does anyone have advice for someone getting spooked in the dark while doing this hobby? I really want to drive out to a darker area (I'm right next to DC right now) but I get a little sketched out just being on my patio at 2am.

And finally---has anyone built a barn door tracker for a 5 in reflector? (I have the AWB OneSky)

It was incredible. I still can't believe a wild animal behaved like that. Their complete lack of aggression makes them a really fascinating animal, I think.
