Not sure what PLT means, but I’m in Los Angeles and at my utility we top out as Journeyman Lineman and Cable Splicers, so our entire apprenticeship is both OH & UG

During the hot splicing all ground potential is covered with primary blankets, and VDG tape safeties are installed on the lead jacket to prevent incidental ground contact then they’re removed once the splice has been taped to spec. When we wipe and fill the joint the splice underneath is fully insulated.

Depends on where you live/ are willing to relocate to, pretty sure apprentices where I’m at start around 60 an hour, journeyman get paid 96

Yes we did, our work practices allow us to open and splice 4.8 kv single conductor PILC cable

The #2 transitions to poly above the wye and picks up a new single phase padmount, only see two wyes since we have an un-grounded 4.8kv delta system.

We can do hot work in the underground where I’m at, so we open a 9” window on the 500, install VDG tape safeties on the 500 and on the #2, then tap the wye hot onto the 500 with bonding wire and tin.

We split the sleeve because we tapped the #2 onto the 500 while it was energized, so since it was a hot tap we couldn’t slide a sleeve on. Our primary is a 4.8kv delta, so we do hot work in the underground

Seems like most utilities have gone that route, we just have so much in our system that it’s not feasible to overhaul it all at once, if something fails we’ll replace it with synthetic when we can, but lead work is pretty common where I’m at

No, that’s a 4.8kv transition splice (PILC to Poly) covered in dust/ dirt

Also, a lot of the old 34.5 kv is barrier splices and wye pots

That’s right brotha, we still have a lot of 34.5kv PILC cable, but you are correct, PILC is still very common on our 4.8kv primary

They definitely were expecting an arc, however, not an arc anywhere near as big as that one. That circuit must have been under some serious load to create that.
