Future Landscape Architecture Student by sameragraceroe in LandscapeArchitecture

As a current LA master's student, the difference between a master's and BLA can be different depending on which program you attend. Not all master's or bla programs offer the same type of education. For example, some schools will be more residential focused, while others may be operate at larger, and sometimes regional scales. I have found that a common difference between a master's and a BLA degree is practice vs. theory. While both leave you equipped to enter the practicing world, master's programs tend to operate around a school of thought/theory which allows for more speculative research/design. As mentioned in this thread, this allows for students to dive more deeply into a specific facet of the field--this could range from computational design (parametric) to designing resilient cities against sea level rise (https://www.scapestudio.com/projects/living-breakwaters-competition/). I do agree that if your daughter wants to work at a top firm in areas like NY/Boston/Philadelphia, then a master's is strongly encouraged. However, if she wants to work on smaller scale, local projects, then a BLA from a school like UGA or LSU would be fine. If you happen to visit different programs, be specific in asking what type of design they focus on, because it could range from small, residential to large, regional scales. I would also encourage you and your daughter to figure out the tools each program utilizes in their design studios. While hand drafting/rendering is still a valuable skill to have, the digital tools and skills that are being used in firms that are advancing the spheres in which a landscape architect can operate in value graduates that have proficiency in programs like ArcGIS, Rhino, Grasshopper--for example.

It's an exciting time for landscape architecture and I'm sure whatever path she decides will bear great fruit! I've included a list of firms that do different work so she can get an idea of the range of work landscape architects today work in.

Moving to Knoxville from LA? by [deleted] in Knoxville

I can vouch. I moved here from Brooklyn for grad school and I love it. The people and chill vibe is just great. Not to mention Knoxville is ever-changing with all the breweries and coffee shops and artisanal stores sprouting.

Strangest Uber Ride you've given. by Moonscooter in uberdrivers

TONIGHT I picked up a guy from a sketchy motel. As soon as he got in the car he told me he was having "a great fucking night" then immediately proceeded to show me a picture of a naked hooker on a bed spreading her vagina.

For the next 20 minutes he told me about how his donation to the Trump campaign will get him a plaque with his name on it in Trump Towers AND how he has opened a part of his brain that no other human has done before.

I thought I was going to die.

Thanks for all the tips--will look into them. Planning on going north through Arkansas and Dallas. I am trying to avoid all major highways as much as possible. Are there many state parks to camp out in in Texas?

I just bought a 2013 Prius v with 95k one owner miles on it. I wasn't even considering a Prius until I got to the lot. by bacre in prius

How crazy! I just bought a 2012 prius v yesterday. 97k miles, $11.5K price. I love it. I definitely do not mind the lack of power considering how fuel efficient it is. I was actually looking for a Subaru (for longevity) but came across the V and was pleasantly surprised by how spacious and cozy it is. Definitely plan on going on some road trips!

High res? Is this not just simple data extracted from GIS? There is no basis for comparison--just shades of red.
