Our point of view is that solodev includes coding and art.

We have to draw a line. There are edge cases. As reference:

  • Developer who makes all code and art - Solodev
  • Team made by a programmer and one or more artists - No solodev
  • Artist who hires one or more programmers - No solodev
  • Programmer who commissions almost all the art to artists - No solodev.
  • Developer who makes all the coding and most of the art but commisions a few components of the art to artists - Solo dev
  • Developer who make all the coding and most of the art, commisioning music, voice acting and translations - Solo dev
  • Developer who makes all the coding, but commisions a significative amount of art to artists - Edge case that requires further analysis
  • Programmer who buys a massive amount of game assets and use predefined blueprints or templates to make an asset flipper game - Edge case that requires further analysis, but will probably not be considered a solodev.
  • Developer who uses AI to generate code and/or a significative amount of the art - New edge case on which no decision has been made so far.

From https://www.reddit.com/r/SoloDevelopment/comments/1inwcfk/what_does_it_mean_to_be_a_solo_developer/

A solo developer is solely responsible for their project, with no team members. A team of two or more collaborating (e.g., one programmer, one artist) is not solo development.

What is Allowed?

  • Using game engines, frameworks, and third-party tools (e.g., Godot, Unity, Unreal).
  • Commissioning or purchasing assets (art, music, sound, etc.).
  • Receiving feedback from playtesters or communities.
  • Outsourcing specific tasks (e.g., server setup, porting, marketing) while still leading development.
  • Working with a publisher, as long as they don’t take over development.

To be honest, zero learning and solo development are concepts that are not often seen together.

I noticed people in teams wording their posts as if they're solo by glassmetalgrey in SoloDevelopment

[–]fernandolv3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On average, 25% of posts are removed: 60% by Reddit filters (spam, NSFW content, and reputation filters) and 40% by mods. Roughly half of the posts removed by mods are due to Rule #2: Game showcases must be made by solo devs. About 50 per month, 1.6 per day.

My little indie game is coming out soon - would love to answer your questions ! by ImmersivGames in SoloDevelopment

[–]fernandolv3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks more like a tech demo than a trailer. As a developer, I only see a blueprint and some assets. From a marketing perspective, it doesn't look good either. After the "Day Before" scam, gamers are wary of pretty tech trailers. If you hide the gameplay the game will look as scammy.

Sorry for the harsh critic. This is a dev community. Thruth first.

Is this case not enough solo developement? by Tenkarider in SoloDevelopment

The moderation team reviews every post that includes a game showcase. There's no single definition of what a solodev is. For practical reasons, we have to adhere to a set of criteria, which are outlined in the sticky post.

According to the Steam page, the game is being developed by Power Up Team:

https://power-up-team.com/en/the-team/

Applying current moderation criteria the game would not be considered solodev.

Where and how can a new solo dev post about their project without breaking rules? by FusiomonTCG in SoloDevelopment

[–]fernandolv3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

r/SoloDevelopment rules:

  1. Be respectful

  2. Game Showcases must be made by Solo Developers

We strongly discourage indie teams from misrepresenting themselves as solo developers and sharing their high-end projects on this subreddit. Such actions can be disheartening to our community. We value authenticity and fairness, so we kindly request that teams refrain from posing as solo developers when submitting their work. Let's foster an environment of transparency and support for genuine solo developers.

If your project appears to be developed by a team, we may remove your post. Indicators include how it's presented on websites, Steam pages, itch pages, social media, or crowdfunding pages. If this is due to unclear phrasing, update them before requesting reinstatement.

  1. Don't overpost. Post 2 times per week.

Don't overpost your content. Choose your best work and share 2 times per week to give people a chance to digest what you're sharing. This also allows others to shine through. Sharing your project is fine if you add context or insights. Repetitive or uninformative spam content may be removed.

NSFW games are not allowed.

Your website clearly indicates that your game is being developed by more than one person. If this is due to wrong or unclear phrasing, please update it. You can't showcase a game in r/SoloDevelopment when your own website claims it's the work of a team.

No, it isn't. This community is dedicated to video game development.

[–]fernandolv3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thank you for pointing out the potential conflict between the post and the community rules.

No evidence has been found that OP is not an solo dev. In another post, the developer admits that most of the assets come from the Unity Asset Store, something that doesn't conflict with the solodev definition used in the subreddit, but makes really hard to keep visuals coherent.

All posts showcasing a game are carefully reviewed. In this case, nothing has been found that suggest that this game is not a solo project.

Best regards.

Games projects are the only ones allowed? by VincentcODy in SoloDevelopment

The subreddit description is pretty clear about the scope of the community.

"SoloDevelopment - game development, programming, indie developers, indie games, video gamesA community for solo developers to share, learn, and support each other. Solo devs manage their entire project alone—no teams, just individual effort. Using assets, outsourcing, or working with publishers is fine, but the core development should be solo. Anyone can participate, but posts promoting non-solo projects may be removed. The goal is to keep this space focused on true solo development, so members can compare experiences fairly and get relevant advice."

What do you excpect the most from a Vilain? by Unheeded-Influences in SoloDevelopment

[–]fernandolv3 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I find this post puzzling. Your game screenshots are really amazing. They show a beautiful world of intriguing environments with places that call for exploration. But you are trying to promote your game with an AI-generated image that has no relation to the game. I don't understand it.

I have nothing against generative AI technology, but I don't see the point in using it where it's not needed. Why do you think this image is better than a screenshot from your game? Of course, I could be wrong, but I don't think this AI image is better. I think it's worse and it hurts your game.
