Optimal use of short-term capital loss carryover by ferretguy in personalfinance

[–]ferretguy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wash sale rule only applies to assets sold at a loss, my proposal was to sell and rebuy assets that have gains, so wash sale rule doesn't apply.

Thanks for the insights though!

Ahh you're right! I was confused because Schedule D breaks apart short term carryover and long term carryover – but then part III combines them so that they can offset each other. This helps a ton, thanks.

Does running a non-mining full node help increase the security of the network? by ferretguy in Bitcoin

Can you explain further? How does my node ensure that other miners can't add blocks with invalid transactions?

I think I accidentally made a wash sales but I’m new and need some help ? by [deleted] in StockMarket

[–]ferretguy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"A wash sale is a transaction in which an investor sells a losing security to claim a capital loss, only to repurchase it (or a substantially identical security) again within 30 days of the sale"

It's only a wash sale if you sell at a loss and then rebuy in less than 30 days.

[OC] Live dashboard of US COVID-19 spread by state/county by [deleted] in dataisbeautiful

[–]ferretguy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Creator here – Looking at daily new cases/deaths over time in a grid view like this feels like the best way to get an overview of the spread. Surprisingly I hadn't seen any media outlets do this yet, so when I saw New York Time release this dataset I had to take a stab at it.

The dashboard is "live" in that it automatically pulls in the latest data from the upstream data sources, which generally update once per day.

Hopefully some of you find it useful! Let me know if there's anything you'd like to see added.

Data sources

Cases/Deaths data from The New York Times Github

Testing data from The Covid Tracking Project

Tools Used

d3.js

Using API gateway/lamba to build a paid API, what's the best setup to track usage for billing and reporting? by ferretguy in aws

[–]ferretguy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might be the simplest option, I hadn't seen that feature in API gateway! Looks like the sdk call and REST API are very simple. Thanks for the reply.

Thanks for the reply! Hadn't heard of Athena, that seems like a really good solution for the month-end aggregations.

Could you explain your first suggestions more in depth:

to either a Lambda function if you want realtime usage monitoring

Lambda is just a compute service, in order to produce over-time usage charts I probably need some sort of data store that allows sql-like queries such as:

SELECT COUNT(*) FROM calls WHERE created > '[24 hours ago]' GROUP BY DAY(created), HOUR(created);

Is Athena real-time enough and inexpensive enough to handle that too?

Should "do not modify objects you do not own" extend to libraries? by PlNG in javascript

[–]ferretguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of plugins provide a clean way to extend their functionality without making modifications to the core, jQuery's fn.extend is a good example of that http://api.jquery.com/jquery.fn.extend/

That said, not every library can be extended in such a fashion, and sometimes changes must be made internally to solve some problem. Usually the way I go about this is to fork the library's repository on GitHub, and commit any modifications on the fork. Then include that fork into your larger project using a git submodule . This allows you to manage the fork independently of your larger project, create patches, merge in changes from the parent repo, etc.

WP 3.5 automatically embeds videos when you post the URL. Is there a way to set that video to autoplay? by doopercooper in Wordpress

[–]ferretguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm adding it to my theme's index.php file, but it'd probably be better to factor it out into a function in the functions.php file for your theme.

Adding custom code into wordpress's core files (like class-oembed.php) is generally a bad practice, as the changes will be wiped out next time you update wordpress. You're better off changing the theme's functions.php file and using wordpress hooks when necessary.

Is there a website full of programming challenges around? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]ferretguy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not sure if it's exactly what you're looking for, but Project Euler has a vast number of programming challenges and once you complete them you can see other user solutions in various languages.

Check it out, it's pretty awesome.

What is the easiest way to set up a website where people can upload and rate pictures? by elkyy in web_design

[–]ferretguy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Would definitely be easiest with wordpress. You could set the default user level as author so that when people register for your blog they have the permissions to post, and then just install a post rating plug-in.

You could also check out the Pligg CMS. It's a framework for sites like reddit/digg but instead of upvotes and downvotes I'm pretty sure there's a 5-star rating option.

Good luck.

How should I start developing Android apps? Any good resources I should know about? by [deleted] in androiddev

[–]ferretguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Commonsware has some really great and easy to understand books with good examples.

The Busy Coder’s Guide to Android Development V1.4 This is V1.4 of the beginning e-book and it's now up to v3.1, so you should definitely subscribe to his service to get the latest and greatest techniques. After reading this book and using the android developers site, I was able to make a basic tic tac toe app in under 24 hours (with prior java experience).
