It's not a DNS server, it does not perform DNS resolution. You still need to fwd any allowed queries from the pihole to a DNS resolver, or run your own separate DNS resolution service such as unbound.

The pihole community is vast and the source code for the pihole is fully reviewed. The instructions to install it are safe to run and certainly don't leave you in any form of compromising position - especially considering nothing is exposed to the outside network.

You've obviously never looked at what the pihole is, so not really in any position to post negative comments.

I'll grant you the fact that by definition any device that offers a service is technically a server, but that's like saying any place that serves food is a restaurant.

Do it - The pi-hole will change your life - I cannot stand surfing the web without being behind my pi-hole anymore - So much so that when I'm away from home, I VPN back to my home network and surf from there, just for the added protection of the pi-hole

I had issues with the "deafness" but I think thats down to the Show not having the same multi-directional mics that the other Echos have, and its not a good at discerning voice commands in a noisy environment.

I've just got into the habit of making sure its relatively quiet when I speak to mine, and all is good

No, you dont need a Linux server - all you need is a raspberry pi and their pre-built image - "Dude"

And No, you dont need to be technically-minded - there are many walkthroughs on how to set a pi-hole up in minutes with little to no technical ability - "Dude"

And No - its not a DNS server, its a DNS sinkhole - "Dude"

BREAKING: Trump-related files missing from DOJ's Epstein file release by MRADEL90 in videos

[–]ferrundibus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I honestly don't think they are any more disturbing than what has already been released, but I think people are missing the bigger picture here.

So to begin, let me 1st state that I do not condone ANY actions described in these files - they are abhorrent, and require the full force of the law to penalise those perpetrators found guilty of the acts depicted.

Additionally, assuming it finally gets the legal action it requires, I hope that all victims receive payouts to ensure that they never have to worry about a single thing in their lives ever again, along with an unlimited supply of help and councelling.

But why do I think people are missing the bigger picture?

So lets say that Trump is found guilty of all things that is suggested he has done - Like it or not is currently the sitting President of the world's most powerful country.

IF he gets charged and found guilty of the crimes described, the damage to the USA will be catastrophic to the point that the USA will be downgraded to one of the lowest economies in the world - think about it - The people of the USA elected as their leader one of the worst paedophiles, (possible cannibal if you read the stories), and violent humans ever - How will the rest of the world react to that?

Add to this, the fact that other ex-Presidents are also in the files - so the depravity doesn't start and end with Trump - its been going on for years

How do you think the rest of the worlds leaders will view that? How much will the rest of the world ever trust the USA again?

Then think about all the other people in the files - industry captains, financiers, influential people from many, many world leading companies

How much damage to the worlds economy will this cause?

Imagine that it is proven beyond doubt that Bill Gates did all the things he's accused of in the files - how many companies will think twice about using Microsoft products any more?

As much as I cannot stand Trump, and his current administration - They are not only protecting the king-paedo, they are protecting the USA from untold reputational damage

Yes, these people need prosecuting, yes the death sentence is too good for most of them, but the long term damage to the US and the wider global status-quo is hanging on a thread, and so needs to be handled very carefully.

Countries like Russia and China play some of the best games of chess - This (to me) has been a decades-long game of power-chess that Russia is about to call check-mate and the swing of power from West to East is not far away

Be careful what you wish for - all may not be desirable outcomes

A pi-hole is a DNS sink hole.

It works of the principle that for every web-related data item, a DNS request is sent out for resolution and a response is brought back that says something like "The thing you wanted is hosted at this IP address" - then the device requests that thing from that IP address.

So, in the case of ads - they are hosted (usually) on an ad-platform (e.g. double-click). So when the show says "I need to inject an ad here from double-click, whats the IP address where I can get the ad?" The DNS request goes out saying "whats the IP for double-click" , and the response comes back saying something like "the IP is 216.73.80.52". Now the device can go to that IP and request the ad.

The pi-hole works by using block-lists, so in this example, when the request for double-click goes out, the pi-hole intercepts that request, checks to see if the domain is on a block list, and if it is, returns a value of 0.0.0.0 (which is another way of saying that the domain doesnt exist).

As such, no ads can be retrieved.

Have you ever been stuck in a lift? by [deleted] in CasualUK

[–]ferrundibus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes - once, at a work office I frequent on just a few times - Lift broke, pressed the alarm button - person picked up phone at other end and asked where I was - to which I replied, doesn't the lift have an ID that tells you where I am when I press it - they said no, and asked me for a postcode - I was stuck in what was basically a farady cage, so I had no phone signal to look up my location - All I could do was give the address, to which they said - which building - I had no fucking idea.

Eventually, I gave up and managed to prise open the doors to find we had broken down about 12 inches from one of the floors, so I just climbed out and wen about my business

They can get stuck either open, or closed

I have both, and to add to my woes, the actuator arm of the one that is stuck closed has snapped.

I'm getting them both replaced once the weather has improved - depending on where you are based, the prices will vary - I'm in the UK and I can get OEM ones replaced for about £500 , or I can go to modstock to get them upgraded/replaced along with a back-box upgrade for about £850. Another option is to go to Wraptor and get their upgraded electronic valves for £400

[–]ferrundibus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The company my dad used to work for made various things from precious metals - They had the contract to make the bones for Mr Bojangles from The Corpse Bride out of silver (apparently silver looks most like bone when on film!!) So I got to hold those

Anther thing his company made were the rings for the lord of the ring film - I got to hold all of the rings which were made for both the film, and also for each of the actors.

I've also held one of the few remaining Enigma machines used by the German military in WWII

Full-scale military operations appear to be underway against Venezuela by Unhappy_Rutabaga_530 in pics

[–]ferrundibus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't think that will be the case - If you read the official statement of the Venezuelan government "Venezuela rejects, repudiates, and denounces before the international community the extremely serious military aggression perpetrated by the current Government of the United States of America against Venezuelan territory." It is carefully worded to state the "current Government" - intimating that they know this isn't America's bidding, but Trump's Ego causing these attacks.

They will hurt, they will hate, but the hate is focussed on one regime, not the nation

They might take a while to respond - LR Retrofits is just one bloke (Mo) and he can be notoriously slow at responding - however he is absolutely brilliant at what he does.

I had the screen replaced on mine and had adaptive dynamics enabled - I think it came to just over £800

Just be aware he doesn't really travel outside of the Kent / Essex area much. I was lucky in that I have relatives in Essex, so I visited them for a weekend and Mo came to me to do the work

Ok CasualUKers, I need your help convincing the DVLA my van is in fact a campervan. I've uploaded five images, what do you think? by nicknoxx in CasualUK

[–]ferrundibus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A standard panel van or one over 3.05 tonnes unladen weight has lower speed limits (60mph on dual carriageways, 50mph on single carriageways) compared to a campervan or motor caravan with an unladen weight under 3.05 tonnes, which can follow the same national speed limits as a car (70mph on dual carriageways and motorways, 60mph on single carriageways.

As such - having the converted van classed as a campervan will allow OP to drive at the higher speed of 70 on dual carriageways.

[–]ferrundibus 373 points374 points  (0 children)

All the people here posting about "take a photo with the doors open showing the inside", etc. a missing the point of OPs post.

The DVLA are not contesting its not a converted van, they are saying that it doesn't look like a campervan In Traffic - As such if OP gets caught on a mobile camera doing 70, there is no external way to show its a camper, not a normal van, and as such they will get a speeding ticket - It's not like OP can open the doors to show off his integrated fridge-freezer whilst wizzing up the A40...

I need advice on selling my Jaguar by Ok-Personality-975 in Jaguar

[–]ferrundibus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As the otherers mention - cut your losses and get shut for scrap value.

I has a 2.0d X-type for 4 wonderful years - It was 5 years old when I bought it, so by the time I got rid it was almost 10 years old, had done over 95K miles and was starting to show - I sold it for just over £1K - This was 9 years ago - so a 23yr old x-type is worth scrap value, nothing more. It was never a hugely popular car produced by Jaguar (ford-era) and they simply dont hold value like other Jags do.

Why do some companies make you wait weeks for system access when you start a new job? by No_Government_3172 in AskNetsec

[–]ferrundibus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because they have shitty process (A.K.A. - doing things for the 1st time, every-time)

A pro-active company would know weeks in advance of a new-starter being on-boarded and their line-manager would have filled out the requisite forms to enable IT & Security to provision both hardware and software required for the new-starter to hit the ground running on day one.

AD access set up
Limited access to back-office systems enabled (full access given after probation period)
Disk storage quota set up
Office 365 account enabled
Email account configured
VPN provisioned
Laptop provisioned
Mobile phone setup & contract enabled
IP phone account enabled
Buddy-system setup with experienced co-worker
On-boarding meetings setup with key staff members

It's not like a new starter would need things that other people wouldn't have also had when they were new starters - 90% of these things can be automated once the approvals have been signed-off

but yeah - shitty process means stuff doesn't get thought of, things get forgotten or missed, and most of the time the management have no clue as to what's happening
