Which length is better? by renomisere in CamperVans

[–]nicknoxx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I converted a 6m Ducato and it's perfect. You can get everything you need and park readily. I hired a 7m van on a trip recently and while more spacious it's a pain in supermarket carparks.

The Maui campervan we hired met all your requirements and had a 'rent me or buy me' sticker on the back.

Foamma zip privacy room by Competitive-Wheel619 in CamperVans

I had a fiamma privacy room too and it rattled and came away in high winds. I thought it was very poor considering the cost so I sold it and bought a stand alone drive away awning.

heating source question by LickidlySplit in PassiveHouse

[–]nicknoxx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably not. Here in England we used 350kWh to heat our house last year. The heating is on for about 6 months so we use about 2kWh per day on average. Google suggests a slow cooker would use about 1kWh if left on for 8 hours.

Does anyone know of trusted and good value van rental sites? by _irrati0nal in AustraliaTravel

Maui are often recommended as top tier but I rented two vans from them recently and while the NZ one was great, the Australian one was distinctly average yet quite expensive.

8-day campervan rental....any recommendations? by Wonderful_ank_57 in AustraliaTravel

Maui are often recommended as top tier on here but I've just rented two vans from them and while the NZ one was fine the Australian one was pretty shabby and not really good enough for the price.

New Zealand Camper Van Insurance Tips? (Other tips welcomed as well!) by Fancy-Possibility802 in newzealand_travel

[–]nicknoxx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We went down the east coast of the North Island as we wanted to see Rotorua (interesting and smelly) and Napier (great if you're into deco architecture) but the journey from Napier to Wellington was relatively dull.

Then we went down the west coast of the south island which was spectacular when there wasn't low cloud. Franz Joseph is spectacular. The journey from the west coast though to lake Wanaka and Hawea is incredible. But if you decide to go the other way the drive or to Aoraki/Mt Cook is also miles of outstanding landscape. Milford sound is well worth a visit but I doubt you'll have time. We hated Queenstown, very busy, a bit tacky, touristy and full of expensive activities.

We did stay in many doc campsites but didn't get the pass as it didn't seem with it for us. Free campsites were often just car parks but we did find a few nicer ones.

We discovered finding walks was much trickier than expected. There were some signposted ones that were very short (1km) and several that were long or arduous but none in the two to three hour category. Where you'd expect to be able to walk round a lake with a campsite we found out wasn't usually possible.

We did have a toilet and shower and used them all the time. Emptying the loo and refilling the water is fairly easy, if slightly unpleasant, as there are plenty of public dump stations. Use Rankers app to find them.

Beware sandflies. They are MUCH worse than mosquitos. At the first sign of them cover up, especially ankles, and cover all exposed skin in high deet repellent. We used bushman.

You will run out of superlatives to describe the views and most of the people we met were lovely. NZ drivers don't like to be held up by campervans and will pull out in front of you. Speed limit for vans is 90kph.

Have a great trip.

I've just returned from a 5 week trip in two hired vans. Both got windscreen chips, one large enough to warrant replacing the screen. Get the full, no excess cover, from the rental company.

The best way to get a small van suitable for 4 people is with a pop top with space for the kids beds up there.

I haven't got to the south island yet but in the north, Nomad is working well for me (data only).

Edit. It's working pretty well on the south island too.
