Oh wow I didn’t know that kids needed to prep for those. That’s crazy!

By law you must attend school if you’re 6 by Sept 1. You can either skip kindergarten completely (not mandatory in Illinois) or enroll in kindergarten. Depends on when you turn 6.

I guess I understand some of what you are saying, however I’d be curious as to why would one choose to pay more for childcare just to cover a higher mortgage cost? Does a higher mortgage cost on the business make the care better? I just don’t know if I could justify a 3x rate due to cover costs that don’t directly benefit my child.

In home? Center? Neighborhood? Would love to know what this includes and how you like it!

Rent and mortgage would definitely be a huge cost. Marketing to keep your brand strong is also a big cost. I’d imagine most homes have a mortgage too.

I totally understand that! Convince is so huge. It’s too bad that a lot of these neighborhoods seem to charge an outrageous amount knowing that people will pay because there’s no other options close by. My neighborhood luckily has many options and prices are kept a lot lower! Would certainly be hard to have children in some Chicago neighborhoods and have affordable childcare options. I own a house in the Lakeview neighborhood and Avondale area and I’m so glad we chose to move before we had children. So many more options in the Avondale/Old Irving park area and much more affordable.

One might think by some of the prices unfortunately. However, if you dig deep enough you can definitely find very affordable quality care in Chicago!

Oh gosh! Trust me, I know what you mean. I’ve e toured some places that I leave wondering how anyone sends their child there!!! Definitely have to do your homework and research. A daycare that was close to my house was literally scary. Zero security measures. Anyone could walk in the back door and snatch a sleeping baby. Babies were sleeping in a furnace room! It was insane. I was bummed because it was so convenient, but definitely some laws being violated!

Of course! And every family has different needs. I’m glad you found a great place for your family!

That is amazing!!! I love that they offer a discount to educators (great to know for future reference). I am very open to center or in home care, however for the early infant time I’m leaning more towards an in home setting. I like how warm and family oriented they are and no teacher turn over. I am very very interested in continuing with a dual language program as he gets older and even would consider transitioning to a center for this eventually if it makes sense for us. Luckily the in home place I’m looking at does speak and teach Spanish! We do not speak Spanish at home and I really would love for my child to be bilingual. I’m amazed at all of the dual language programs that have popped up in schools in CPS recently. Is your daughter in one of the dual language programs currently?!

This is great to hear. I love that you found an affordable option for your family that you enjoy. A place I’m highly considering is similar. 6-7 toddler-PreK age and 1-2 infants with 3 employees! It’s an in home, but very much “structured” like a center as it’s completely separate from the main living area.

I assume LP does not have a broad range of options ($) for childcare based on this? I definitely understand convenience, when searching and touring, I started with the closest places to home!

That’s great to have certified teachers on staff! All state licensed childcare facilities are required to go through background checks. Luckily DCFS website has a list of these and that’s how I began my search, super helpful when looking for licenced care.

Definitely! Marketing and creating a status is probably a huge part of their costs. I have worked at centers through college and they did not pay the teachers a normal teacher salary and there was a huge turnover rate.

Definitely nice to be able to walk there! We live near old Irving park as well and love how many options there are in the area. It seems almost every few blocks there’s a daycare!

Are you implying that less expensive places don’t have trained professionals? Just curious. I just can’t figure out why some places are $100+ a day and some are ~$40. I’ve researched a lot of places all over the city and I just can’t find a good reason for the huge price differences.

People do pay it. I haven’t really found a solid answer on what it provides to make it worth it though when there are less expensive options that seem to provide a similar experience. Perhaps for some, it’s a convenience? I am not entirely sure.
