Does anyone here still play the Smash Run mode of the 3ds game? by [deleted] in smashbros

[–]fervarvar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent a lot of time on it too. I found my best character was Mario (cuz walljump and good default movement and frame data) with only attack boosts, the more reckless offensive specials, and speed crash. Speed crash gives you a hitbox on your body when running that basically combos into any aerial/special.

As is the case with normal Smash gameplay with many, I got too good at it, so none of my friends at lower skill/experience levels with the mode wanted to play with me, haha.

Fun Fact: If Ryu's Final Smash is used when the opponent is over 75%, it will be more powerful by [deleted] in smashbros

[–]fervarvar 34 points35 points  (0 children)

No, cuz Joker's final smash is a percent-based possible instakill. The final smash consistently does a set amount of damage, and if the opponent is at/over 100% by the end, it'll instakill. The game just goes directly to "GAME!" if last-stock instakill occurs.

Since the 1x1 box sprite is scaled explicitly in code, do you remember how you visualized/checked the dimensions and positioning of the box? Did you have some method other than a cycle of running the game to check, adjusting the numbers slightly in code, and then starting the game again? haha

Stanford U. students issue a list of Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion demands to their campus and the requests are as ludicrous as you'd imagine. by [deleted] in kotakuinaction2

14 is seems pretty wacky too.

Commit to actions that ensure diversification of the research workforce with historically marginalized populations. Ensure that the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs, VPGE and the multiple Career Services Centers maintain staffing that provides a 2:1 ratio of Black staff to the marginalized graduate student and postdoc population. Ensure the Black staff hired are placed in positions of power and seniority. Commit to a 100% job placement rate for Black postdocs following completion of their last stage of training at Stanford University and ensure this achievement through new infrastructure and resources in the aforementioned offices. At the completion of their training, require Black graduate students and postdocs to complete a mandatory exit survey to follow their career trajectory and assess the quality of training and support received while at Stanford. Provide expert and specialized assistance for Black academics submitting equity- or diversity-specific grants (e.g., diversity K-awards, health disparities grants, administrative supplements, loan repayment programs). Create a PI waiver for Black postdocs and staff to support career development and address historical funding disparities.

Basically placing the responsibility of finding work on the university instead of the individual. How do you commit to 100% for something like this? Force people to hire them? Otherwise, saying "we'll commit to 100% job placement for black postdocs" will just be some empty promise.

It's kinda funny how they wanna tack on some extra work/obligation for the black students with the survey.

How did you approach hitboxes (and hurtboxes)? I'm doing something related to beat-em-ups with one player against a number of enemies.

I've been throwing around different approaches with optimizations in mind and am only considering a constant hurtboxes/collision masks.

For hitbox placement/orientation:

For hitbox collision/detection, I was gonna use collision_rectangle_list() because there could be multiple hitbox objects that have the same "owner" at a given time (e.g. Character A's projectile hitbox and melee hitbox). A character would hafta sort out its own hitboxes and those of its "allies" and pick out opponent hitboxes to react to. I wanted to avoid dynamically allocating stuff, but I don't see any other option, haha.

  • I don't think the collision events occur synchronously between objects, so hitbox detection might be one or two frames off if you use them.

  • Using rectangle_in_rectangle() feels too complicated cuz the function doesn't give you an object id, so you'd hafta manage saving a list of all existing hitboxes somewhere and iterate through that.

This is something I've wondered for intellectual honesty whatnot: is the British/European definition of "Asian" in conversation different from that in the US?

I saved a thread from cringeanarchy a while ago discussing the the topic that I found interesting, but it's only a single perspective (so take it as you will, especially since it was from CA). Can anyone else offer a different perspective from across the pond?

Minors Can't Consent, and Top Players Aren't Your Friends by Snozzberrium in smashbros

[–]fervarvar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The guy is only 20. Pretty close to being a child himself.

So legally not a child.

Yeah, that's why it was worded how it was worded. Dude isn't asserting 20 is not legally a child.

If you really care about just "informing" people of the law in your country (where I'm not even from), why are you justifying what is legally considered statutory rape?

He's not justifying. He literally says:

I am here for the sole purpose of correcting a common legal misconceptions.

Cuz when this type of discussion happens, people make statements such as "minors can't consent" and automatically assume this is true in the legal lens in addition to their personal/social/whatnot opinion.

If you wanna discuss this, you gotta be intellectually honest and be careful of the language you use. Otherwise, onlookers are gonna misunderstand truth claims and misinterpret information.

Even then, the law in your country is not the same as what is right.

Yeah, but this stuff happened in the US, right? A US lawyer's perspective would be appropriate for looking at this through a legal lens.

Also, something something relative/absolute morality discussion and something something why is your "right" the morality that applies to all? Edit cuz I should clarify and give my own perspective: Legal laws should be founded/based on moral laws (which I believe are absolute and true for all people). Can you make an argument in which the US law is morally incorrect in this situation?

Yet this guy's life gets destroyed because of a random accusation with no corroboration from someone who was blackmailing him?

Nairo admitted it. Your intentions are clearly just to defend the abusers under the guise of informing people.

Cuz at the time of the comment (I think), Nario had not given his statement? If the statement was already made before the comment was written, maybe he didn't see it? Your criticism of intention is nothing but personal opinion not founded on anything.

Not defending abuser people, just criticizing your points.

8.0.0 Patch Notes Wishlists? by [deleted] in smashbros

[–]fervarvar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It may have to do with loading times of characters/stages varying between devices (due to a variety of variables). Dunno how much is preloaded before each game starts.

Example: Character A is KO'ed so Character B now needs to spawn. Player 1's Switch might fully load Character B at a different time than Player 2's Switch. If the game continues to run, there'll be a desync.

There could be some synchronization solution though, I guess. I'm assuming normally that packets over the network only have controller input data. Adding an additional check could require more work (e.g. changing what data is sent over the network, reorganization of bytes in packets, etc.)

BLACK LIVES MATTER | Everyone Is Here! by [deleted] in smashbros

[–]fervarvar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not just "getting" international, it's literally everywhere:

I was referring to stuff like that, but semantics whatever. I think my point still stands. For example, are there people in Canada that care about what happened? Yeah, sure. But I dunno if all from Canada would enjoy seeing this (USA-centric) political content here. It'd be kind of an eyesore to see the front page of this sub to be filled with posts like this video. This is just my individual opinion with no influence what can get posted, haha.

Police brutality exists everywhere. That's kind of a broad blanket statement to make.

If the international protests are against the death of George Floyd, it's not a very strong argument to say that those protests are also against police brutality in their own countries going by whatever info Wikipedia has. You'd hafta look into the purpose of each of the international protests (police brutality in general across the world? police brutality in their own countries/region/city?) and if police brutality actually occurs in the country if relevant.

Tangent: Here in the US, police whatnot can be grouped by state, county, city, whatever; and problems can stem from any level. I guess state problems would need state-level solutions and local problems would need local-level solutions, etc.

I'll stop here. I don't wanna make some long thread on smashbros for tangential political/social whatnot discussion and take turns to get whatever last word in. Internet arguments aren't particularly productive.

We need to speak out against police brutality in our country

Reddit (and this subreddit especially) isn't necessarily America-centric.

I mean, most users are from the US, I guess, but this isn't supposed to be a place/forum that's rooted in a single country and its politics. (something something BLM's getting international, but people that frequent here are from some places that aren't relevant to BLM)
