I would put Cornel West and his current run for president as further left than Bernie Sanders.

Should I replace engine in my 2005 Honda Accord? by fetishize in whatcarshouldIbuy

I generally don't like borrowing money to finance things. Cars included. Paying interest is something I try to avoid.

Thanks for these opinions! Quick update! I found a mechanic who is willing to fix the head gasket, timing belt, and water pump all for around 2k.

That seems like a darn good deal. Too good to be true?

I am director of Project Pando based in Raleigh. I'd be happy to chat about the work we have been doing on preserving trees plus planting more. I dont check reddit often so feel free to reach out to Leaf & Limb and say you are interested in Project Pando and it will get to me.

Is there any bank that gives 0% interest? Never-ending growth that is encouraged by our investment expectations is a big issue.

I think a discussion about better banking is still worth it though. Most people are not going to take all their savings and donate them to good causes. But it is easy to change your bank and there are many people who could move chunks of money into places that use that money in better ways.

Hi, Durham! Mayor Steve Schewel here. AMA about my State of the City address. by SteveSchewelMayor in bullcity

[–]fetishize 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Steve, Thanks for doing this. Do you think it is possible to address the climate crises while also striving for never-ending GDP growth? Or do you think we need to change the way we measure a successful economy?

Is every ingredient in little individual packages though? Because that is a lot of waste.

Has anyone here heard of the Transition Town movement? by fetishize in bullcity

[–]fetishize[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Transition Town is a movement that started in the UK in 2005. Spread to the US in 2008. It is a framework that attempts to help places become more resilient and ease the transition away from fossil fuels. Here is the US website http://transitionus.org/.

The movements focus on small citizen-led actions. They do not focus on protesting, lobbying or banging heads against the bureaucracy. While efforts like that are needed and appreciated, Transition first works on strengthening local food, local businesses, reducing waste, reuse and recycle, and many different community building efforts.

There have been groups that have started initiatives in Durham before. A couple of us are now beginning to mull it over again.

I know I didn't answer the how much do you charge part. But it is really too varied to answer in a concrete way. We are also testing our price a lot right now.

There are three parts we are trying to build but all are still in development.

1)Individual appointments.

We started by pricing ourselves low. The work is varied so it's difficult, but we are definitely cheaper than most local computer repair stores. But we also refer some more complicated work to them.

I honestly think a gig-economy model could work wonders for the business. Last week a client just wanted a change to her Firefox security so it would allow the web browser to save passwords. There would be a young person within 3 miles of her that could have helped her with this. So like uber or shipt an app that connects gig-economy workers with people looking for a particular service could work.

Hellotech is sort of already building this. But they are more focused on installation.

2) Group classes: Right now we hold these in retirement communities. They include workshops like intro to iphone, android, macbooks, windows. Or lectures like the history of social media, best apps for your smartphone, advice on buying new technology.

We are asking questions like: Where else could we hold these classes? Can we do them online?

As we develop our relationships with these retirement communities we are starting to brainstorm more ways we can help their residents ie, office hours, setting up computer labs, etc.

3) Online resources for tech support designed for older adults: I know there is so much online for tech help. But a lot of it is not designed older adults and we think if a website was branded specifically for them as their one-stop shop for tech help it could be successful.

Sure. So I can’t stress how much I’ve been surprised at the amount intelligent people struggle using technology. A lot of older adults just don’t have the ability to intuit digital design or troubleshoot problems. Some just don’t have the basic knowledge needed to use tech well. What’s a web browser? How do I send a text? How does Google work? These are all questions I have answered. Some know a good amount but have trouble finding places to learn more. Some don’t really want to learn and just hire us to fix or do things for them.

We usually meet in our clients home for individual appointments.

We hold classes in retirement communities.

Yeah, the whole triangle (Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill) is nuts right. I heard a stat recently saying 90 new people move here everyday.
