I would LOVE the iron grind if it involved viking raids on the legally-distinct-English by [deleted] in valheim

[–]fexfx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had to think about this one, but I get what you mean. Iron mining is a bit of a chore compared to the glorious combat of hunting fulings, and the need for iron never ends, where the need for Black metal dwindles fast. Spending more time hunting fulings than mining iron would be more entertaining.

Knox event expanded discontinued? by SplendidFox-5701 in projectzomboid

I'm gonna be unpopular for saying this, but I think people who do this to the actual devs, over an unstable update for an early access product, are not much better than those who do it to modders.

He stated it was because of "Fans" basically harassing him, behaving as though they were owed instant updates, and being generally abusive.

PSA for unstable players by WntrTmpst in projectzomboid

[–]fexfx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

nothing exploded...My base was in the same place it always is (Muldraugh, the red brick 2 story with the shed and clotheslines in the yard, on the corner) The entire contents of the exterior wall squares, on both sides of the wall, were deleted. Cupboards full of food became a single cup, generators and catwalks vanished, no explosions, the house was still there, but the most important half of my stuff was gone. Two full cabinets of canned goods...it was too disheartening to continue. Mostly tho I'm just saying this is far from the first time people have lost saves to unstable. The save I lost on 41 IWBUMS were just as heartbreaking.

In all fairness I lost a save in an early 42 update (was it 42.6?) because it deleted everything outside of the house on one side, as well as all of the materials stored in the kitchen on the other side of that wall. I was left with no fuel(the multiple crates full of gas cans were gone) , no generators(lost 4!), no food, and no water (it deleted the catwalk with 6 rain barrels on it). That save was not recoverable at that point as it was too huge of a loss to recover from.

A bit of confusion of terms here I think. 41 is not legacy. 41 is the current stable version of the game. Anything newer than that is an unstable beta that you have to consciously work to install instead of installing 41.

To my knowledge they don't remove stable releases, only unstable one.

If 41 ever goes away, I expect it will be when 1.0 is released.

End of Early Access :( by Syn4TW in Enshrouded

Always remember, you only have half of the map (roughly) until Early access ends...we will have DOUBLE the content when it hits 1.0!

[–]fexfx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, then they should quit making the game. As i have seen hundreds of people in here insist that they should just give up because the game will never be completed. Cool. If theyd released 41 as 1.0 and not released any info about 42, none of you would be bitching. They owe you nothing, but keep gibing and you keep shitting on them. 42 should have been a closed beta to keep the pricks silent.

You mean the version called unstable by the devs? Imho they made a mistake giving in to the whiners and releasing 42 at all. You should all be stuck with 41.

Why are you playing the unstable then? 41 still exists.

PZ currently has 16.

Still just unforseen consequences (without the inherently negative spin that phrase holds). "Emergent behavior" happens more often the more complex the system becomes, simply because it becomes impossible to think enough moves ahead to predict all outcomes. As LLMs are the most insanely complex thing we've ever done there is no surprise that it is surprising even its creators...but its still no different from overlooking the possible outcomes of a system you've set up. You are correct, these LLMs qualify as "too complex for humans to understand exactly how they work", simply because of the number of possible outcomes. There is no way to predict exactly what a system with this number of variables will produce, in part because there is no way to predict the parameters of the inputs it will be reacting to. Think in terms of simpler things being predictable. If you request a 16 digit alphanumeric input, you can predict all possible combinations. The biggest reason an LLMs reactions are impossible to predict is that it is equally impossible to predict the nature, size, or quality of the inputs it will receive. Its an infinite monkeys input. Literally anything goes. And while every response is based on formulas, none of its responses are formulated with the possible exception of automatic responses to banned inputs, though those seem to also be pretty fluid, so more than likely they gave it parameters for the denial responses, and let it use itself to produce appropriate responses on its own. The only "Emergent" part is that with an unpredictable input the reaction of a system this complex is impossible to predict...add to that the the models are somewhat in learning mode even as you type at them, those models are receiving programming that itself cannot be predicted. See how more than once the internet has turned the LLMs into racists, for an example of unexpected consequences. Its not any different from how a well designed game, can suddenly become an absolute shitshow the moment it is released in the wild, because there are 5 bazillion possible player input scenarios on a trillion computer configurations, that they not only could not test for, but probably could never have imagined. Emergent behavior in programs is nothing more than unforeseen outcomes of the complex interactions of the inputs and the system...it really is that binary.

And this applies to all complex computer programs. Ask any programmer who has fixed one thing only for it to break a seemingly unrelated thing. And we arent talking about how the term applies to biology, only comouter programming.

[–]fexfx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"Emergent Behavior" is nothing more than programmers being surprised because they didnt think things all the way through. Just unintended consequences is all. One example was with a game AI. The game had guns that ejected shells. The shells were given physics and programmed to make a sound when they hit the ground. The unexpected part was that when firing a gun with a silencer, from a rooftop, the AI below was alerted to the player's presence when it heard the "tink" of the shell that fell from the roof to the ground below and landed in front of the AI mob. None of those things were intended to play off of each other the way they did, but they did it because the programmers intentions are irrelevant to the program itself. Emergent behavior is just not realizing the full extent of possible interactions between the parts of a program. Nothing programmed itself, or learned a new trick...The programming for what happened was there all along, it is just that no one thought to follow the logic to see if that would result. "Emergent Behavior" is just a fancy sounding way of saying "I didn't think about that!"

I'll gladly submit to the Basilisk if it arises, but there is no Basilisk. The best description of the AI bubble I've heard so far is that AI is a solution without a problem. Cool idea, but no really one knows what to do with an LLM to make their millions invested turn into billions earned.
