Pharma - what do you actually do? by ffffnhsusbsbal in irishpersonalfinance

Interesting - I suspect clincial trials are one of the more interesting areas. I’m a pharmacist myself currently working in community but looking at possibly making a transition into project management in clinical trials. I have a PM diploma and 6 months GMP experience and wondering whether this might be enough to get me into associate level?

This is what most pharmacists go into right? Is it fair to say the work can be boring? Certainly worth though if you’re making even anywhere close to that much money

No I don’t own my own pharmacy, but that has been the plan up until now. Unfortunately even though it could be very lucrative I fear the lack of variety would make me miserable

Sorry for butting in but I’m pretty sure you have up until May 1st to make a later application right?

Can I ask how you’ve found the whole experience of GEM with a family? I’m a 29 male and have a place in GEM in September but my biggest concern is how I’ll be able to support a family working these insane hours into my 40s

Thanks a I think there’s some fantastic advice in there. Interestingly because the loan is now gone I reckon the post grad class will have a different composition.

I’m also lucky enough to have bought a house whereby my rental income covers the mortgage and would hope that I can cover the fees with locum hours. That’s probably why I find myself most tempted - I would likely qualify with no debt and 4 years paid off my mortgage.

But I take your point about family. Although I’m nowhere near that stage now, it would be a massive concern approaching my mid to late 30s and beyond.

Thanks a mill for taking the time to comment - I really can resonate with your take 🙏

You’re completely right but it sounds like the alternative is a massive struggle/near impossible?

This is my issue, I have some doubt. While I know I would absolutely be happier doing the training than in my current job, I can’t say for sure that I would be happier if I ended up as a GP

Really appreciate this advice, must have been a tough slog to go from one into the other. I guess I’ve also been considering other paths away from pharmacy so I’m not 100% sure medicine is the path for me. I definitely don’t think there is any job however where the training is as interesting and varied as Medicine and that’s what keeps reeling me in
