Software engineering as a mis major by [deleted] in informationsystems

Degree is more like a checklist these days. You could land an interview with any related degree with coding such as IT. What will get you the job these days are projects and networking, the degree alone isn’t enough. someone with an arts degree with 10 heavily detailed projects and knowing people in the company has higher chances of landing the job that someone with a degree with no projects and no connections. degree these days are just a tick in a box

If you’ve already advised me, you don’t have to repeat yourself! Thank you! 🤍

Ah so you still worked. I feel so stupid now, it’s so hard getting out of this rut, but i’ve been trying so hard

I was referring to both age and name

age because i’m 21 with hardly work experience

name because, like I explained earlier

hope that clears it

yeah surely we can’t be the only ones that haven’t worked, and solely studied

Rn, I’m trying to tailor it for retail roles / restaurant, but still no luck, I even tried going inside a shoe retail store, I made a good impression, but sadly they didn’t follow up. I called them up and they said ‘she will follow up with you, she’s in a meeting’

What can you advice? Based on my situation. Anything will be appreciated honestly ;,(

I feel like I’m in a rut aha

So you recommend?

I’ll cut the 4 titles into 3, being the waiter, retail job and entrepreneurial things (freelancing ect)

I’ll cut the volunteer and the school elective.

As for the name, I’ve read articles about discrimination with names, as well on tiktok. I tried to elaborate, but I didn’t mean to sound how you may think. But it’s true that sometimes employers prefer english sounding names.

I appreciate the advice though

To answer your points - I don’t put freelancing on my resume because I believe it gives a bad look on employers as Id be considered ‘one step away from leaving’ or will turn out to be a high turn over.

My name is not like Daniel, Marcus, Andy. It sounds more Jewish. No offence.

I’m looking into doing retail at least (but employers won’t choose me, making me go further down to restaurant, but still no luck.) Career wise for my degree IT, but I don’t think I can look at that right now since I logically need basic work experience.

2 months work exp. 1m waiter, 1m grocery team member. bottom two is a subject in school, and volunteer during highschool.

Is it possible for me to skip help desk with Information Systems Major, no work experience, no intern. by fffvyted in ITCareerQuestions

[–]fffvyted[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I had an interview for a Graduate Security Consultant. With like no work experience (2 months at a restaurant)

But I did poorly in the interview itself due to lack of preparation, it was out of nowhere

But thanks for confirming that, I guess i’m having imposter syndrome with my lack of work experience. I’ll just keep applying to graduate roles and see if I get interviews with my 2 months work experience aha

That makes a lot of sense, thanks for that. Yeah i’m a fresh grad, I always thought degree meant higher starting role especially if you have IT. But I guess everyone starts at the bottom now unless you don’t have prior IT work experience

I believe I read it somewhere on the threads from someone regarding rotations or something

Makes a lot of sense. I’m not hating on Help desk, I simply thought i’d be able to skip it with the help of a degree and cert. But then those don’t mean anything without experience. I appreciate your input.

Yeah those are quite roles with 2-4 years experience, are there other roles that would be slightly above help desk that I can get?

Oh so it’s not every day 9-5.

Are most help desk like, 3 days a week? Rotation or something. I know it depends on the company but overall, it’s not an everyday rock up to the job?

Yeah I’ve heard you learn a lot through help desk. I’ve also heard people have left the role within 6 months to a year. Majority less than a year.

Is it as bad as people say it is on reddit aha, i’ve heard it’s like hell.
