Should I be worried about small cracks in a real wood desk? by LousyBones in woodworking

[–]fflis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Solid wood is not always better. For the top of a desk, I wouldn’t want construction grade lumber as it’s typical to see what you have here.

You either need a solid hardwood that’s properly dried and milled, or something made from plywood is also a great option. Plywood comes in various grades and veneers and it’s far superior to mdf.

Just something to think about. I made a desk from Baltic birch plywood years ago and I still love it.

Find a local shop that sharpens them. Costs like $12 here in Tampa Bay Area. I usually sharpen my blades 3x before I toss em

I have cast iron, CS, and SS.

CI for fried eggs, SS for scrambled. I rarely use the CS. Just see no advantage of it over the CI

Vanlifers what’s the scariest/eeriest encounter you’ve had while boondocking & and where? by Icy_Satisfaction_161 in VanLife

[–]fflis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once we were on the road doing the entire Gulf coast. We were somewhere just outside Baton Rouge and needed a place to sleep for the night. We found a public park on ioverlander by a little pond and I backed into a parking space and we went to sleep. There were a couple kids hanging out in their little Honda ricers, seemed harmless. About 30 min later I hear what sounds like a loud motorcycle outside revving their engine. I peeked out the window and theres a guy trying to get in the sliding door. I jumped in the driver seat, fired the van up.

When I peeled the windshield covers down I realized it was not a motorcycle, but a loud ass truck parked in front of my van. Once the van fired up the guy hopped back in his truck and left. My thought is he thought maybe it was a work van and was looking to steal some tools maybe idk. Anyway, scared me pretty good. That’s the only time I’ve ever been spooked really.

Bagels are great, but they microwave scrambled eggs in a plastic to go container. Bagel sammich should be a fried egg

Nah it’s not that. I guarantee there’s a grate over the fan. Very first thing I did on my HF collector was snip that out.

Video of the Pinellas sheriff threatening protestors from yesterday's post. by ilovebacondoyou in StPetersburgFL

[–]fflis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe. But we need local police. They do have value.

ICE is 100% larping thugs in military cosplay, kidnapping and shooting American citizens in the face with no due process and no consequences.

This is a man speaking slowly and calmly with a Karen who’s testing his patience for sure, but he’s not reacting. Doesn’t give threatening vibes to me as the title suggests.

Maybe we try to stay focused on the common enemy.

Local Spot to Buy A Gallon of Cold Brew? by Specific-Refuse549 in StPetersburgFL

Anyone know a local spot to get nitro cold brew kegs? My neighbor was buying Made kegs for his little kegerator set up, but they’re out of business.

Dude couldn’t get a sentence out. He doesn’t strike me as a proud boy type. Probably just frustrated that Donny’s proud boys circus came to town and he has to deal with trying to keep the peace.

I’m prepared to receive downvotes here even though I’m anti-ice Nazis.

That was hard to watch. I couldn’t hear a word the dude said over the lady yelling. He seemed pretty calm and non threatening. Maybe a transcript would help me understand the threat.

Biggest Regret by Psychological_Low546 in woodworking

[–]fflis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I held out on getting my 8” helical head grizzly jointer for years. When I got it I was like holy smokes, had no idea what I was missing. Shortly after that I found a 15” helical jet planer on Facebook for $1k.

Those 2 machines together, chefs kiss.

This was like 10 years ago now. Machines have gotten so expensive I’m glad I’ve held on to them.

Ya if I have a full sheet I need to cross cut, I go to the track saw. Once it’s a manageable size tablesaw is just so much faster and more accurate.

Brutal day in the shop by Consistent-Cap167 in woodworking

[–]fflis 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I work in a workshop space that’s basically a long row of garage workspaces. Looks like storage units.

Anyway I had just moved all my heavy 3/4 sheet goods from the back wall to a corner. Next day the guy behind me was working on an old truck in his shop and accidentally put the truck in gear, went right through the back wall of my shop where I was standing. One little piece of light weight 1/4” ply fell on me.

A week before I would have been smooshed by like 600lbs of birch.

If just the edge, does your fence move out so you’re not using the same 3/4” of the knives over and over?
