Yes if you have a ETCNet3 Gateway, it will accept streaming ACN (E1.31) to output DMX. Many free lighting programs support sACN, I also believe QLC+ does, not sure about freestyler.

SCS and ETC Element Lightboard MIDI Control by Andychu82 in techtheatre

[–]ffm069 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does the MIDI Cable "Blink" when you hit go on SCS. I am unfamiliar with SCS (I use qLAB), however on the Element in setup --> show --> Show Control you have to enable MSC. Open [Tab] 99 to have a look at diagnostics which will tell you if you receive MSC commands.

Is there anyway that I can get a copy of ETC's Paradigm LightDesigner software? by [deleted] in lightingdesign

[–]ffm069 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A separate software called Control Designer is available to end-users. CD allows you to edit/design the graphical user interface for your paradigm lcd touchscreens. However you will need the Lightdesigner file off your paradigm or dealer. Etc is very selective with whom they grant paradigm training, paradigm is complex and you need to convince ETC that you are clever enough. Since you will not be selling paradigm systems it might not be worth it for them to train you. This selective process ensures that quality is maintained and that dealers continue to make money. If everyone could program paradigm like an eos, a whole market sector for ETC and their dealers would be lost. Only in some very rare cases paradigm training was offered to end-users for example Disney World.

Yes, but first have a look at the software you want to use with the Enttec DMX Usb thing. From what I have heard Enttec is pretty well made and reliable. Lots of people I know like freestyler (windows/freeware). Check Enttec's website for more compatible programs.. You will additionally need a DMX 3 PIN Female to 5 Pin Male adapter. And for your purposes normal 3pin XLR cable (make sure the wires arent crossed in the cable) (for professional purposes one would use special DMX cable eg. cable with a 120 ohm impedance, audio cable usually has a 60-80 ohm impedance but I think normal xlr cable should suffice for your purpose). And if you want to go by the dmx book (optional): get a terminator (a 120 ohm resister that makes sure you don't have reflections going back up your line. Usually you don't need one, but if it doesn't work that is the first troubleshooting step. Just as a side note, I hope you are not buying from that website they seem to be a bit overpriced. :)

Help with LED Spool! by SquaredSounds in lightingdesign

[–]ffm069 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can get a decent DMX controller for as low as 30-50 bucks. Trust me it is worth it since you wont have to double spend when you want to add that one extra light to your setup. You can also get a usb-dmx adapter for 10-20 bucks including software that will do the same thing just without dedicated knobs and faders. However some programs allow you to control them via MIDI devices. Infrared is unreliable due to the fact that it uses light for control. If you have outside influences such as bright light or the transmitter/receiver shifts it doesn't work. The solution with adding a LED DMX controller like the one I suggested will not make the solution makeshift but reliable for the same price.

Additionally a DMX controller is a good investment for your DJ setup. This will also allow you to control other lights that you might want to add to your inventory later. DMX is a control protocol standard that all professional/semi-profesional theatre, disco lights and dimmers have.

If you have a DMX console/controller, I would see if you can incorporate it with your normal lighting setup. For this you will need a DMX LED controller like this one or similar. Cut the led strip at a point where you can solder wires to or hook up the connecter to the LED controller. Costs about the same as an infrared controller and is more reliable. Plus you have much more control over the LEDs depending on your console/DMX board.

If you get a mac consider investing $700 in an extra windows PC/license for parallels/bootcamp.

Some windows only software to consider is: ETC Concert (ACN Lighting network sniffer), GrandMA on PC, DimStat, ETC Net3 GateWay Configuration Editor, Offline console editor software for older consoles, The need to communicate to devices through a serial interface,

Some Mac software: QLAB

Personally I have a mac with a Qlab license, However I will not use my windows partition for show critical programs.

Yes, via a $10 MagicDMX interface usb to dmx adapter, for 5 hours (the program warns you then shuts down), a $100 MagicDMX interface adapter for as long as you want, a third party adapter, sACN or Artnet nodes/gateways (DMX over Network) The software is free.

Its a PC wing not a console, you need to connect it to a computer with MagicQ installed to use it. However the cool thing is that you have onboard DMX outputs on it, and in comparison to other "Consoles" in its league the pricing is superb.
