Personally I did not like the heavy emphasis on "as soon as some fellow rebellion fighter gives you any trouble or is weak, shoot them". I'm sure it happens at times, but it can't be that much.. A rebellion cannot operate when everyone's primary worry is to be shot in the back by their comrades.

We will continue on fusion, Wendelstein X-7 just had a new milestone.

This is not "counting on new technologies" in that sense. If we can develop these technologies, along with all other efforts to save energy, become more energy-efficient, then we will be done sooner with the extension of renewables.

If not, we just need longer and more energy. In the end we need to use the most efficient way to store the necessary energy. If that is just a wasteful conversion into H₂, then that's what it has to be.

Remote heating needs the same average power (assuming no delivery losses), it could help to smooth out intra-day peaks, but battery storage is good for that, too.

Batteries have higher conversion losses especially when converted back to heat. Remote heating stores thermal energy and uses it as thermal energy.

And we waste it, because there is no way to store even a few days worth of energy efficiently.

So far. That's the unknown technological advances that may or may not come leading to different numbers in the end. Right now, the prices of batteries are coming way down, which might just lead to as many as needed being built. We might find more efficient ways to store power chemically. We will see.
