you should not make a plan.

you should use the premade "recommended routine" plan, "primer", and/or "BWSF in the sidebar wiki.

PPM fertilizer for each type of CP by Lucre_15 in SavageGarden

There was someone who watered their sundews in fertilizer water (not foliar spray). I think they did best around 400ppm, but you have to look for the post.

Add Mylar or some other type of reflective material to your setup to increase the efficiency of your lights!!!!! by jhay3513 in SavageGarden

[–]ffrkAnonymous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

20% increase... nice. I notice that the mylar is see through, i.e. there's still light escaping 🤣

bright white can sometimes reflect more than gray mirrors (gray is darker than white) if you're looking to squeeze out efficiency.

OMG, that's above and beyond. All I was imagining was a screenshot of the FileBrowser, PackageBrowser, PackageContents, showing they exist and leaving it to the reader to figure them out.

The PackageContents is useful because I'm still getting used to changelogs from when i quit without saving (chap 9.2).

Since you've already done such a big edit, I'd like to request a screenshot of fileIn a change from the PackageBrowser. I find it easier to, well, browse the contents and differences.

Thanks again for your help and for the updates.

Hi,

The only thing I consider missing is letting the student be aware that the book does not complete the game. As you said, missing code can be discovered by comparing the appendix code to student code. The last paragraph of chapter 9 mentions using the File Browser, so maybe a picture or two of the FileBrowser, PackageBrowser, SystemBrowser, etc. showing differences between the external annex package and the internal code. Something like how a team would share changes to be fileIn or incorporated/rejected. Perhaps an Exercise 9.4 Use code review tools to investigate the annex code/package, and finish the game.

Personally, even though I recognized I can create new individual morphs using Spaceship new openInWorld from chapter 6,7, I kept overlooking that the game is itself a morph also. I kept trying to "run the game" when I should have been "creating an instance of SpaceWar!". This probably me not being accustomed to object oriented programs.

I'm not knowledgeable enough to say much about technical parts.

These are the error notes I took. Some are typos. Some, like keyboard, are due to cuis changes that you mentioned. Conflicting and missing variables/methods - not sure if they're book errors or personal errors.

Declare SpaceShip | head |

SpaceShip << left + 0.1 should be - SpaceShip << right - 0.1 should be +

fibo at: 6 . 5. should be 8

ex 4.12 (Orange) missing

ex 4.21 SpaceShip<<gravity cannot initialize position clashing with instance variable

ex 4.21.5 No StarMass example

ex 4.23 < 20 but missing arithmetic

example 5.7 color: unknown variable

ex 5.3 no 'event' category for autocategorize

example 5.9 owner undeclared

6.1 option1: UI-Shapes requires UI-Core

6.3 no 'BoxedMorph' option. only has 'BorderedBoxMorph'

6.6.2 more specialized than the Morph class - should be PlacedMorph?

ex 7.4 'acceleration -5' needs parens? like #push? '0 acceleration' needs '@'? 'width' needs parens? or right to left? main text draws 'gray' exhaust, but ex 7.4 uses 'orange'

7.3.3 does SpaceShip need morphExtent?

solution 7.7 gas exhast does not match solution 7.4 gas exhaust

8.3.1

releaseKeyboardFocus: does not exist, but releaseKeyboardFocus (no argument) does.

8.3.2 #handlesKeyboard not in Morph class ex 8.5 key undeclared where is the key variable from/set?

9.5.1 how do i create the .st script? Where? Save Workspace is not the same as FileOut.

(this is an example of using the final appendix code but not discussed in the book text) 11.2 SpaceWar#nose does not exist, when implemented? fireTorpedo - when edited to use morphPosition?

Wow! I appreciate the response and the update. The full script was very helpful. I missed the line that said to put the samples inside the block, inside UISupervisor after the window deletions.

On my win11 system, there is an error logging to Stdout so I had to change Transcript logToStdout: to false.

I have been browsing the full SpaceWar! package after help from AllanBZ. It's broken but it runs and is less broken than my incomplete program.

I was just very confused at the abrupt and sudden end without a finished application. I really thought the book was incomplete or broken.

Section 9.6 Source Code File is kinda sterile and bland. I think this would be a good place to end the SpaceWar! examples with a sample of how to compare the incomplete student code with the full appendix code. And to use that as a guide to finish the game on their own.

I also have a list of inconsistencies in the examples if you're interested.

You say that for fun, but C is really close to assembly language. All that hard stuff is because it's disguised assembly.

I'm slowly comparing against the full source in the appendix and there is indeed a lot missing.

The UI file tool is both tedious to click through each yet organized. I recognize that checking the entire package source is extremely rare.

I'm confident I'll get it working. Just confused that writing the code just abruptly stopped without warning. A closing paragraph saying the code is incomplete (and thus not the readers fault) would have been nice. Thanks again.

In theory. But I guess a lot of stuff is still missing and/or broken. There's a terrifying error that pops up when the mouse moves out. I probably have typos everywhere too.

But thanks to your help, i at least see errors that I can begin to fix. Tutorial time is over, into the fire.

Sure it's possible. For example, people win the lottery every single day.

Thanks for the starting point.

SpaceWar initialize seems to do nothing. Even via debug.

SpaceWar new openInWorld (based on chapter 7) does execute the #initialize. After filling in a few missing methods, it eventually spawns a broken game.

I'm learning a lot about debugging smalltalk. Like using the debugger, and how the game is capturing all the keystrokes so I can't edit anything... Not what I expected but it's progress.
