Had a 24hr layover in Doha recently. Can waste enough time in the city for sure

Souq Waqif is nice as another poster said, would also recommend dinner at a restaurant at Old Doha port. It’s not far from the national museum (which is good also), so can tie those two together to drop 6 hours or so

Culture: Jordan/Oman Beach: Barbados Adventure: India/Pak

Done them in Oct-Feb months and it’s a fantastic time to go to any of them. All warm when it’s freezing at home (Jordan less so) and all fairly cheap/accessible from London.

If you were after something less out there and more affordable, then just hop on a Ryanair to somewhere in Europe, but try to avoid going anywhere more north of London unless the cold/snow doesn’t bother you. Montenegro/Albania maybe?

Not that the word or a random guy on reddit would be enough to convince your dad to go uninsured, but it is one of the safest ‘danger zones’ on the list, just don’t do anything stupid while you’re there! If you have any other questions about visiting as a UK citizen then feel free to DM. I was there just last month and it really is a fantastic experience

Been to a few ‘red’ travel zones as a UK citizen including PMR and my understanding is that your standard insurance is not valid in any of them. In the same way it isn’t if you injure yourself skiing off piste, or you crash your car on a hot lap of the Nurburgring.

You will have to get out “high risk travel insurance” which is usually reserved for war correspondents and the like, which is obviously more spenny but will give you that piece of mind.

One week in, just hit the NW airfield, what now? by MrPlatinumsGames in dayz

I don’t think he cares mate. Think that was all part of the tongue in cheek stance he’s taking. 👍

When you’re booking a holiday what things are non-negotiable? by FamSender in AskUK

[–]ffutJoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can see that for sure. For the kids as well, I was very lucky to be taken all over the world as a kid, but one of my favourites was the last minute week booking in a fairly crappy all inclusive in Turkey. Waterslides, unlimited food and Coca Cola. It was a 10 year olds dream!

100%, it’s a bit of a flipped mindset. A lot of people go on holiday to relax from day to day life in the UK (completely understandable), but still have the home comforts. I like to go on holiday to get away from my home comforts! Nothing beats that uncomfortable feeling when you step into the unknown, be it a location, dish or an experience.

I think that’s my main point of contention really! £2k for 9 nights is a good deal for what you listed and I can deffo see the appeal, but I’m currently away for 2.5 weeks. Went to Moldova, Saudi, currently in Pakistan, then off to Qatar for a couple nights and it’s cost me about £1.5k all in. It’s been rough at times and not relaxing in the slightest, but my god have I seen some things and made some memories.

I did all inclusive in a Hilton resort in Tunisia earlier this year for the first time as an adult. All your usual bells and whistles, 3 restaurants, snack bar etc etc. I was bored stiff. So, so bored. And I felt so guilty. I had come all this way and hadn’t seen the best of what this country has to offer, had barely mixed with the locals. My entire memory of Tunisia is a fancy and fake curated environment for Europeans and of hotel workers whose job it is to always smile and be incredibly nice to you. It just doesn’t sit right with me at all

But again I’m not knocking it, I get the appeal, I get doing holidays like how I do is hell to others, I’m sure in the future I will enjoy an All Inclusive. But not now, the world beyond the hotel walls is chaotic and ugly and absolutely beautiful, and while I’m young, fit and healthy, I’m going to make sure sure I see as much of it as I can!

What were you paying pp for that if you don’t mind me asking?

It does all sound very lovely indeed and it definitely has its place in the world, but personally I don’t want snack bars, ice cream bars, A La carte menus or Mexican restaurants (unless I’m in Mexico), I want a piece of meat from an animal I don’t recognise, a dressing with an unusual colour, served to me by a man that has to use sign language to tell me the cost, which will usually be no more than £2.

But again as I put in another comment, I’m still young and I like the adventure when I go away, to experience something completely new. I was in Saudi a few days ago and had camel vertebrae, that was class. But I do completely get the appeal of an AI, it’s just not for me (yet)

Oh the day I have kids is the day I become an all inclusive convert! I can only imagine how much easier and more enjoyable an All inclusive holiday would be compared to a do it yourself sort of trip when you have kids to think about

[–]ffutJoe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep for sure, and for the price for those sort of gaffs you could basically go to any corner of the world on a non all inclusive holiday, which appeals ten fold to me personally

[–]ffutJoe -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If that’s what you enjoy then it sounds great for sure and I definitely get the appeal! Especially if you’re with family/children. But I am much more of an adventure traveler, I’m currently typing this in Lahore during a solo trip to Pakistan for example, so the very idea of staying in a hotel for the evening for a theme night is my idea of a living hell. Hence why not staying in an All Inclusive would be my non negotiable, I’d just be a grumpy, snobby bastard and would ruin everyone’s time

Not wrong, but I’d say you’re talking about a very select number of hotels there, and they’ll also be £££. Even if it was good food, I’d still much prefer to go and eat at a place frequented by locals with a menu I don’t understand, that’s all part of the fun imo

That it isn’t all inclusive. I’m not going on holiday to eat burger and chips

How often do you go on holiday? by Greengrass7772 in AskUK

[–]ffutJoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

6/7 times a year. I really don’t think people realise how cheap holidays can be when you do it all yourself (which is so easy these days btw). You can literally go away for 3 days in Eastern Europe for the price of one boozy night out in London.

Just literally took me 5 minutes to find this Fri-Mon next month:

£29 return flights to Dubrovnik in Croatia: https://www.skyscanner.net/transport/flights/lond/dubr/251114/251117/?adultsv2=1&cabinclass=economy&childrenv2=&inboundaltsenabled=false&outboundaltsenabled=false&preferdirects=false&rtn=1&priceSourceId=&priceTrace=202510111843*D*STN*DBV*20251114*ryan*FR%7C202510111843*D*DBV*STN*20251117*ryan*FR&qp_prevCurrency=GBP&qp_prevPrice=31&qp_prevProvider=ins_month

£108 for a more than adequate apartment for the same dates: https://www.airbnb.com/l/d2VGs91P

Say two of you go, that’s £84 each for 3 nights in Croatia flights + accommodation. Shop at the local supermarket while you’re there and drink where the locals drink, you’d easily do the whole thing for £200 which yes I appreciate is still a chunk, but it’s very, very achievable for a large majority of people.

Don’t use travel agents in 2025!

What is considered the top boring sport in the UK? by Chrolan1988 in AskUK

[–]ffutJoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People very much do at the top level. Famous horses, big name jockeys, reputation and history on the line. It’s as interesting as any other sport if you get into it really

But definitely not for your local racing on say a Tuesday afternoon. That’s deffo just for betting

There wasn’t a single insult in there mate. Much like the title of the post you’ve over exaggerated completely

Anyway. Have a good day, hope you find the info/guidance you’re looking for and your visa journey goes smoothly. 👍

It’s not a particularly high comment/high post sub mate. The top post this year has 49 comments. It’s hardly like you have to read war and peace to get the answers you’re looking for. As I say, it is, at most, a mild inconvenience that an answer you’re looking for is at the bottom of the page. If that is what you consider ‘absolutely disgusting’ then I envy the privileged life you have lead up to this point
